While the article doesn't indicate the cause, I suspect heatstroke is a possibility.

She was in Usery Mt. Park. I am guessing that this was probably the Pass Mountain Trail. Hits me close to home because I have done this trail many times over the summer.
If she moved here from ND she probably was not ready for exerting herself in extreme midday Arizona heat.
