Suggestions Wanted for Week Long Hike after Thanksgiving

Post by big river hiker »

I am planning a week long back packing trip from Nov. 25 to about Dec. 1 and am looking for suggestions. I am comfortable in wildenness areas and do not mind rough terrain. I have been doing this for the last 4 years and have hiked in the areas of Powers Gardens, Matazals Mountains and Cochise Stronghold. I
would be interested in others joining me if anyone is interested. I am looking for a route in Southern Arizona as I am coming from Minnesota and like the sun and warmth before going back for 4 months of cold and grey. However, if there is something that just has to be seen in Central and Southern Arizona I would be up for it.

I would suggest something in the Supes, of which you should find a wealth of information on this site.
Otherwise I would suggest lower elevation hikes in the Gila Wilderness next door in New Mexico.

Big River - Being that your visiting from out of state consider the Superstitions. Look at the pictures just posted about the Reavis Ranch North & South trail and Rogers Canyon. All done by a small group with two overnight stays, one at Reavis and the other near Angel Basin in Rogers Canyon. You can from this area take in Reavis Falls, Circle Stone, Mound Mountain, Frog Tanks trail and Rough Canyon if you want to. It will probably be colder than you would like but there is so much to see. PM me if you have any questions. Indian ruins, ranching ruins and lots of natural wonders. By the way my home was Granite Falls, MN., until I threw away the snow shovel, headed for Arizona and began hiking/backpacking the Superstitions many years ago.....

The Rainbow Bridge area is lovely if you bring enough water and warm clothes for nighttime!

Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness is way cool. You are hiking in the creek much of the time, and I'm sure the water will be pretty cold that time of year, but neoprene booties (the kind used by scuba divers) inside a pair of old running shoes might work. They had a big flood there last year that scoured some of the canyon bottom, but it is still spectacular. Permits are required, but can be obtained online from BLM.
