Coyote Buttes permits for Jan 18th and 19th

Post by kanode »

I have 3 extra hiking permits and 1 parking permit for Friday and Saturday of this week for Coyote Buttes and the Wave. Anyone interested? $10 per person for both days.

- Friday Jan 18th: Coyote Buttes North and the Wave from Wire Pass. This is also the trailhead for day hikes into Buckskin Gulch and there should be several hours available to explore it after seeing the Wave. (Need to drive up Thursday afternoon or evening.)

- Saturday Jan 19th: Coyote Buttes South from Cottonwood Cove. 4WD required due to soft sand.

There are cabins, a bunkhouse, and camping available near the trailhead. The low is forecast to be 22 with a high of 43.
Paria Canyon Adventure Ranch, Campground and Hostel
On US Hwy 89 between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT on the Paria River between Mile Markers 21 and 22. (Very close to the north end trailhead.) They'll check you in as late as 11pm if you call ahead. Cabins are $40 plus tax.

Hey!

I'm looking for a place to go this weekend. I have Friday and Monday off and you seem to be a good candidate for a question such as this. How are the trails out at Coyote Buttes? Is the Wave the great exposure of dune sandstone I've seen pictures of in that area? I am in Flagstaff so this area is what, a 2.5-hour drive? Thanks for posting, I'm new to this site but I am very glad I found it. Take care!

The Wave is probably the dune-like sandstone you've seen in photos. The trail to the wave is easy with some scrambling if you go beyond the wave to a couple of arches. 2.5 hours is about right. The turn off is halfway between Page and Kanab. I'll send you a PM.

It's probably closer to 3 hours. 2 hours from Flag to Marble Canyon. Another 20-25 minutes from MC to Houserock Valley Rd. Another 20-25 minutes up to the trailhead. If you go the other way, through Page, its at least 2.5 hours to the turnoff onto HRVR, and then another 20-30 minutes down to the trailhead.

Haha, you're right. Normally it would be 3 hours but I was in a bit of a hurry and made it to the TH in 2 1/2.
