Coal Mine Canyon

Post by PaleoRob »

From the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Page

"**SPECIAL NOTE: COAL MINE CANYON IS CLOSED until further notice."

No explanation given. If you're planning a visit to the area, I'd suggest calling the Cameron Visitor's Center at 928-679-2303.

Bummer. This place was on my "short list."

Too bad about the closure. Do you think this is temporary and associated with the thaw cycle? I could see how the resulting "mucky-muck" would be considered hazardous...

I had a chance to visit back around Christmas/New Year's and can say this is a special place!

This from Ambika on AZH:
I called the cameron office and they were ready to issue permits for the place if I showed up Mon-Fri between 8 am & 5:00 pm ....I specifically asked about closure and they said they asked the local office and they were told it was open.
So either its over already, or more likely, the website is out of date. Either way, it appears to be open. Hooray!

I was there yesterday and we had a good time wandering about the top end of the canyon -- It is open.
