Havasupai Suggestions

Post by ljm9304 »

The largest group I have been to Havasuapi with was 4, and I have never gone with any girls. This summer I am the "leader" of a 4day 3night trip of about 15 people, with a mix of girls and guys. In the past we have lived off of MRE's and the packs from REI that you add boiling water to. But with girls going there have already been requests that we do a little cooking. I have one of those little burners about 4 inchs in diameter, some people in our group said they have a camping stove. Can you guys give me some suggestions on what to bring for meals, what is easy to cook etc.. We plan to have our stuff packed in on mules.

Unless you're throwing a cooler full of ice on one of those mules and bringing down frozen chicken breasts and burgers, I think you've already got your menu planned out.

Plus, cool girls actually enjoy Mountain House as much as you do. And the other ones will enjoy the walk to the village where they can buy the best greasy food for at least 100 miles in any direction. :D

Of course it does ... the wine glass is already empty. Tomorrow you'll wake up and realize they're just ordinary vegetables. :D

REI and WIde World Maps have backcountry cookbooks. some of the stuff is very easy to make, yet very elegant. Be sure to 'wow' the group with Orikasa folding dishes. (or fozzils)
I have made some pretty bomber stuff using fresh vegetables and dried beef, couscous and quinoa. Instant rice is a perfect base for many dishes too.
here's a great little stew:
1 foil pack chicken
1 cup egg noodle
seasoning packet from "creamy chicken" ramen noodle
1/4 cup freeze dried peas (sprouts, wild oats, henry's)
2 Tbls. flour
pepper to taste.
cook egg noodle in boiling water for 3 min.
add chicken, flavor packet, peas and flour.
let sit for 3-4 minutes.
add saltines?
serve with tortillas and peanut butter dessert?
a good little stew like this costs about $4 and feeds TWO.
single serving mtn. house costs $5 for ONE
I still like mtn. house but c'mon, those are pretty ghetto.
