Cool Weather in superstitions

Its about that time thats its going to start to warm up in the next few weeks. So what are some good hikes in the superstitions that are at an higher altitude?

Most of the hikes on the western side of the Superstitions are a lower elevation so it won't be long til the thermometer starts to raise to uncomfortable levels. The eastern side has hikes like Reavis Ranch (one of the more popular backpacks in the state) that shouldn't be too bad, although I've not been out there much this time of year. All of the trail descriptions here have a rough guide if you click on the Weather link to give you an idea. Obiviously though those arn't accurate all of the time, but that could help you out

Reavis is a good choice but I recommend starting your hike around 10 PM or midnight to avoid the sun and higher temperatures of the late afternoon and evening. The route from the north is very easy to do at night as it is the old road into the ranch. The route from the south probably should only be attempted at night if your already familar with the trail. If your still hiking in at dawn the sunrise should be spectacular. Be sure to take some pictures for us.

Use a very low light source and carry it in your hand as this will highlight any irregularities in or on the trail such as roots, dips, rocks, rattlesnakes, etc. When stopping to rest, carefully check the ground around you before sitting down. Lots of little night creatures out there in the dark that are hard to see. If you should come across a skunk just turn your light off and stamp a foot or hiking staff quickly three times on the ground. This is a signal the skunk uses to warn others and they understand it as well and will take off in another direction when you do it.

Once in the Reavis area you can then day hike to other sites such as Mound Mtn, Circlestone and the other various indian sites that are abundent in the area. Let us know the condition of the blooming of the apple orchard. No blooms due to a frost means no apples this fall. Have fun and be safe out there....
