Grand Canyon Rim to Rim

Post by ck_1 »

A few hard core hikers here at HAZ are in the initial stages of planning a Grand Canyon rim to rim hike. The specifics have not yet been set, however, it will take place approx Oct/Nov of 2002.

This is a 20+ mile day hike. To call it a tough day hike is an understatement. This hike will kick your butt big time and should not be considered by those unfamiliar with Grand Canyon hiking.

We'd like to know if anyone else is interested in this hike.

ck1 isn't kidding about this being a serious hike, I've done it and it isn't easy, and if you're not prepared for it, it can kick your tail, big time! This is a trip that should not be taken lightly and should not be undertaken by anyone not in great condition. If you haven't hiked in the Grand Canyon, this is not your introductory hike. If you're up to it, we'd love to have you join us! Post a response here, or pm ck1 or myself and let us know, we'll get back to you with more info.

This sounds like a winner to me. Are you planning it as a day trip? North to South? South to North? Consider that the North rim may be closed in November so it could turn into a Rim to Rim to Rim. Also, some of the water points get turned off, usually late October I think. I'm having some footwork done soon so I'll have to check back with you later. If you are thinking of an overnighter, I should be up for that by then. :)

We were not planning to spend the night. We have discussed both north to south and south to north...leaning I think to the North to South route, but again, nothing set in stone...let us know if you are still interested...

azhiker96 is correct about the North Rim being closed in November. It is open from mid-May to Mid-October weather permiiting.

I have a couple of conflicts the end of September but, depending on the date you pick, I am definitely interested in joining you.

I hiked from the North Rim to the South Rim in Sept 98 and completed a rim to rim to rim in less than 24 hours in April. So, even if I am not able to go, I would be happy to answer any questions.

Down - then up...

Post by olesma »

Well, I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested. Mark it down as a tentative for myself and 1 possibly 2 others. I have a few friends that would love to do a RTR hike.

Keep us up to date as your plans firm up (which I am sure will happen - and you hardly need to be reminded of that).

I am VERY interested. Probably will kill me, but is death really such a bad thing?

I am up for it! We'll have to confirm when the North rim closes and setup a shuttle to drop us off. I've done this hike from South to North. It'll be fun going the other way.

Well, mercy my goodness! I'd be really interested in this too. The advantage of a north-south route is less altitude gain at the end and a nice snort of brandy in front of the fireplace in El Tovar... but that just my opinion. I'm definately interested if the dates work out.

Mike has me run along on all fours with a Nalgene Bottle filled with brandy tied around me neck. He says I look like a St. Bernard but I don't woff very well, Nealz. -R

Hello,
First post here for me. I would definately be interested in participating. Like most everyone else, it would depend on the date. October would be best for me. September is no good and I agree November might be pushing it too late. Please let me know.

Has this come together? I have a room reservation at the lodge for the night of the 13th that I may not need, if anyone is interested. The north rim closes that weekend. Email me for more info.

Consider breaking into two groups, one S-N, the other N-S, and swapping keys at the bottom. Ribbon Falls would make a great break spot and water stop for both parties!

My husband and I have been planning a rim-to-rim-to-rim for a year now. However, we don't have any place to be in a big hurry, so, we're taking a week to do it. South Kaibab to Phantom campground, to Cottonwood, North rim for 2 nights, Cottonwood, Phantom, then out via Bright Angel. We're doing this trip next week. Can't wait. Hope your "day trip" is equally as enjoyable.
It's the journey, not the destination. ENJOY, and keep it SIMPLE
