Sonoran Desert National Park
Sonoran Desert National Park Friends is an organization created to
study, advocate, preserve, and defend this place forever. This place
being the proposed park that will include Organ Pipe Nat'l Monument, the
Cabeza Prieta Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, and part of the Barry Goldwater Air
Force Range. Bill Broyles, author and board member, will discuss the
history, facts, and threats that face this beautiful country and their
efforts on making this area Arizona's newest national park. SDNPF is a
recipient of an REI Conservation Grant.

Pack that Kayak
Join Pete Zwagerman from Permagrin Canoe and Kayak School for an
informative discussion and demonstration on preparing and packing for a
sea kayaking adventure. Pete will go over the proper gear and equipment,

Hiking the Arizona Trail
Thinking about hiking, biking, or horse riding across the great state of
Arizona? Ever hear of the Arizona Trail? Join Arizona Trail Association
Chief Trail Steward Larry Snead as he provides an up-to-date briefing on
the trail's history and construction progress. Then join Dave Hicks in a
verbal Arizona Trail hike from the Mexican border, at Montezuma's Pass
in the Coronado National Memorial, to the AZT's northern terminus just
west of the Paria Plateau on the Utah border.

Outdoor Adventures for Young Adults
Join us for a slide show and discussion of ways to introduce youths and
teenagers to the wonderful outdoors. Brian Sehner, founder and director
of Pangaea Quest - Teen Adventure School, will discuss techniques and
methods for involving youths and teenagers in wilderness activities such
as: backpacking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, and biking. Brian will
share his experiences from the past 10 years in leading trips for youth
lasting from 2 - 45 days in

Sweet Light in NavajoLand
LeRoy DeJolie, expert large format photographer and Navajo Indian, will
offer a slide presentation and clinic on the many photographic faces of
Navajoland in northern Arizona. His images will take you on a
photographic journey through little known areas of the Colorado and
Kaibeto Plateau areas, slot canyons, sage-covered rangeland and
unearthly sandstone formations of his homeland. DeJolie is a photography
workshop instructor with the Friends of Arizona Highways and for
NavajoLand Images workshops, April through October each year. View

Geocaching
You're thinking about buying a GPS receiver, but you're wondering what
you would do with it. Or you've bought one and figured out how to use
it. (You've managed to mark your driveway as a waypoint and can find
your way back to it.) Now you're wondering, 'What else can I do with
this thing?' Come and learn about the growing new hobby/sport of
geocaching. Learn some of the tricks of the trade from veteran
geocachers Bob Renner and Steve Gross. They'll explain what geocaching
is, how to use the Geocaching web site, how to go about finding caches
and how to hide your own cache. While knowledge of how to use a GPS
receiver is not required to attend the clinic, it will not be covered in
detail during the clinic.

Arizona's National Monuments
The Bureau of Land Management is the proud caretaker of five National
Monuments totaling over 1.4 million acres in Arizona. Come watch as a
photo gallery takes you through these five treasures, from the Grand
Canyon-Parashant and Vermilion Cliffs on the Colorado Plateau in
northern Arizona, through the central Arizona mesas of the Agua Fria, to
the Sonoran
Desert and Ironwood Forest stretching toward the Mexican border. Learn
about what is happening in these special areas, how you can enjoy them
and be involved in their management. After the presentation you will
have an opportunity to ask questions of BLM representatives and learn
more about these areas. Information will also be available on BLM
National Conservation Areas.

The Tempe REI store is on the southwest corner of Southern and Priest. The PV store is at the north end of the Target parking lot just west of Paradise Valley Mall and north of Cactus Road.
