I have seen quite a few who "pack" firearms .... I don't see the point if your firearm is at the bottom of your pack....what ever is after you is going to get you long before you get what you are "packing"!
Has any one had any experiences with Mace or similar deterents ? I think these would work very akin to .22 -- enrage !
I do not think there is a good alternitive, if a firearm is needed. I have carried my sidearm (compact S&W 45) in the Sedona wilderness (http://hikearizona.com/t2008/11/22/4852 ... 298-03.jpg) tucked into my packs hip belt pocket. I was told that there were mountian lions in the area, so better safe than sorry, I was solo after all. On the 3 day trip, I met no lions, but I did meet a pack of rangers. They made no comment about my clearly visable pistol.

The time from you seeing a mountain lion running at you, unholster your weapon, hoo hoo poker it, aim it, and fire it...then the mountain lion has either already begun snacking on you or was a very sick mountain lion to begin with.
Besides, mountain lions only attack small women and children unless they are rabid. You might as well take a portable lightning avoidance system based on the statistics of one attacking you.
Edit: typo rapid/rabid

This goes for almost everything except bear, as a matter of fact...

Tis why I don't hike with females.
At least that's the story I'm sticking to.

Striker fire. If I am wrestling, it gives me a chance.
Does someone make a light weight lightning avoidance device? I'd take that along too!

The simplest is a hiking partner carrying all the metal. Maybe that's why I hike alone so often.
Anybody can make a hike harder. The real skill comes in making the hike easier.
