Utah BLM land for sale

Post by azdesertfather »

Did you hear that the Bush administration has been secretly trying to push through selling a bunch of land in southern Utah for oil drilling? Lands with petroglyphs and canyons...some of which include land near Nine Mile Canyon, Dinosaur National Monument and Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

To read more, Google "auction of scenic utah land"...a CBS News article comes up.

Not knowing all the facts, I'm inclined to cut the guy some slack;

"I know I done wrong," Woolsey said. "But I feel grateful I got a second chance."

Southwest Archaeology Today for Dec. 24, 2008

Southwestern Archaeology Making The News - A Service of the Center for Desert Archaeology

- President Bush Pardons Pothunter: A St. George man convicted in 1992 of digging up ancient Indian ruins on public lands in Garfield County has been pardoned by President George W. Bush. David Lane Woolsey is among 19 people being pardoned for various crimes as the president prepares to leave office. Woolsey was convicted of an aiding and abetting violation of the federal Archaeological Resources Protection Act and sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service.
Sometimes you just have to wonder, "What was that president thinking?" Bush is not the only one...they all tend to make some pardons that make you want to scratch your head and ask, "WHY?..." Definitely not the way I think our founding fathers intended for this privilege to work.

This is unconscionable, although it comes as no surprise. It isn't the first time something like this has been tried. Years ago there were plans to build a nuclear waste dump in Lavender Canyon, which is just outside the Needles District of Canyonlands Nat'l Park.

Those magnificent canyons must be protected. I for one will be there to lie down in front of the bulldozers, if necessary.

too bad there's not a powerful enough lobby to fight for protecting these lands...it often comes off as what the rogue "treehuggers" do to get in the way of "progress"

It makes me ill that certain people and governmental agencies consider the profits of SOMEONE ELSE to be more important than preserving those areas that must be allowed to endure. I know far too many people who make less than $50K/year, but are deeply concerned with the profits of oil and mining companies.
Thinking mining is great? I realize we need certain minerals, but we most certainly do NOT need arsenic- and mercury-tainted sludge inundating our rivers (see the poor folks in Tennessee, but at least they had all of those great mining jobs to provide economic security before their general vicinity became hazardous to living things...), or uranium flowing into our water supply.
Sometimes this stuff makes me want to vomit and cry at the same time.
