My first hammock!
I just got my new Hennessy Hammock (well I bought it used, but new to me!) in the mail today. I set it up within 5 minutes using my patio pillars as makeshift trees. It works very well, super comfortable and I can't wait for my first night in it. Heck...I might sleep out there on the patio tonight

Ya I almost considered going there while I was home for the holidays. Ended up spending too much time with family and friends to really get it planned.Hoffmaster wrote:Yeah... probably. Re: My first hammock!
RALLYTOAD check out the hennessy hammock website: they are offering a super deal, buy any hammock over $100 and get a free Scout hammock and 2 sets of snakeskins!
I suggest you purchase the Ultralight Backpacker ASYM and a Large Ridgerest to go with it. You can get a JrB Nest or No Sniveller UQ later. Then, give the gift of hammocking to someone else! (the "scout" model is slightly smaller, made for kids basically)

Re: My first hammock!
RALLYTOAD and to anyone else, here is a one day only discount! REI has anything ending in $0.93 on a deep discount, up to 50%
I dont know how low this will go, but its a tarp, Travel Hammock, and hanging kit, right now its showing $70 but at midnight 1-9-09 (tonight) Eastern Time it will drop in price... I have about $100 RETAIL in my cart, and im expecting to pay about $18 for all of it (if it doesnt sell out quickly)
go to rei outlet and search for "Grand Trunk air bivy"

Re: My first hammock!
is it anything on the site, or just the holiday clearance items?
I wish it included the .83$ stuff as well, theres a ton more of those items than the .93$

Re: My first hammock!
some items ending in 83¢ are being added to the site, and selling out fast too! these items are showing up in the cart @! half the sale price... so if its $2.83 on the website, when you add it to your cart it will be $1.42 but not all .83 items will reflect the additional 50% off yet
items ending in 93¢ like the hammock, may be discounted up to 50% but you have to check back after while... it may not be any discount at all on top of the already low price. But, it may. load up your cart, and keep refreshing every hour or so.

Re: My first hammock!
this is what Im now hearing: "I think it's really shady that they told us all it starts at midnight, and then started early. The customer service lady basically told me "sorry for the miscommunication". Lol.. nice.
I asked if all the .83 stuff is going to go an ADDITIONAL 50% even though it was marked down today since the sale says "starting Friday, take an additional 50% off all items ending in .83".
She said "Maybe but I can't garauntee it"
I said "So if I order today after the first discount, and then at midnight the price gets cut in half, do I get the lower price?"
She said "If you order today, then we can't honor any further discounts".
So... if you want something popular, order it today. If you want something unpopular, you can wait until tomorrow to see if it goes another 50% off"
sounds like whatever ends in 0.83¢ is already marked down. That isnt the way the email told me it was going to be. Just another reason why REI isnt my favorite store...

Re: My first hammock!
Well, I had about $300 worth of goodies in my cart and set my alarm for 1am to see if any prices changed. Nothing changed, but a few items became unavailable. I ended up dropped about $200, $100 of which is a new down jacket!!! SWEET! I also got a bunch of odds and ends, pants, shirts, hats etc...
I love REI.

Re: My first hammock!
Question for any hammock experts: what kind of bill of material should I be looking for to get a hammock set up?
I have a hammock in my backyard, and it suits me just fine. However, it's definitely not for backpacking.
I got hosed on that REI sale. I guess XL clothing and size 11.5 shoes don't make it to sales very often.
rljamy turned me on to this site:

Re: My first hammock!
James, most UL and recreational hammocks are made with 1.1 oz uncoated nylon. Some are light polyester. More serious attempts use coated or calendared nylon (calendared is a process involving hot rollers, that seal one side of fabric making it water resistant, but still breathable)
The hammocks aimed at overnight camping and long term life/use are made with 1.9 ripstop nylon. That will hold 300lbs and last a good long time.

Re: My first hammock!
I'm surprised at how comfortable I've gotten my setup now. Went and bought a blue CCF eggshell pad from wally world and just rounded off the corners by about 3 inches. It fits great into my hammock and opens it up very nicely now. Also seems to make it lie flatter in alot more positions than without as well. Under that I just have my Thermarest if the temps warrant it. My total cost was only 90 bucks between a $70 hammock (with free shipping), $10 blue pad, and $10 to make a suspension system. On top of that I prolly only gained maybe at most 3 pounds to my base weight from using a tarp shelter (prolly lost a pound or two compared to my tent) but gained what I'm sure is going to be a much better sleep on the trail which will help immensely when I start doing more than overnighters. Only thing I can complain about is the bulk of that CCF pad but at least it weighs next to nothing.

Re: My first hammock!
the sleeping is soooooooooo much better, sometimes I wanna go hand out on my porch instead of sleeping in my bed!
as far as the pads, I used an inflatable pacificic outdoor thats 1.5" and weighs something like 13oz, it spreads the hammock and provides a lot of warmth

Re: My first hammock!
I'm actually debating finding a way to rig poles into my futon so that I can hang from it. It's quite a bit more comfortable than the futon is and tons more comfy than sleeping on a dizamn tree root or rocks or just unlevel ground period.Crocodile Ryan wrote:the sleeping is soooooooooo much better, sometimes I wanna go hand out on my porch instead of sleeping in my bed!
