Nighthikes

Post by Nighthiker »

I have been catching up on my reading and I came across this article from the June 20th, The Arizona Republic, Night Hikes. The article also lists several parks that offer Night Hikes. Has anyone done these hikes ? and do you need to go on a ranger led hike only ? And are the McDowell Mtn Parks and Preserves managed by two different entities ?

I would not go cross country but I love to hike on a well worn trail by moonlight. It has been awhile but we used to go down the canyon at dawn--hang out in the shade by the river all day and hike out in the evening. The best nights are just before the full moon. I carry a small flashlight for dark corners and just turn it on once in awhile.

I've taken a few night hikes in the Supes...before they were closed. With a full moon you can turn off your flashlight/headlamp and stroll along. We've never run into a snake although that's a great time to find one. We have seen several tarantula's. They're pretty cool.

bbmcritt has posted the link to the article and it includes telephone numbers for night hikes. I have contacted with regards of not going on ranger led hikes but have been playing telephone tag. The Mcdowell Preserve looks like day hikes only (I disagree with Carla).
