Geocaching (oh, no, not this again!)

So... I have never tried geocaching before. I have an ulterior motive. I am trying to get a job at a resort, guiding hikes and other outdoor activities. It seems I should learn how to geocache, so I just spent about an hour on that geocaching website, downloaded a waypoint near Greer to my GPS, and tomorrow I'm going to go try to find it. The real challenge for me is working through all the downloads and other computer stuff. Definitely NOT my forte, but I did finally manage to get a waypoint downloaded INTO the danged GPS. Hurrah!

I found an old thread about Geocaching here on HAZ, from 2004. Seems there are a lot of problems connected with it--caches placed in illegal places such as archaeological sites and in wilderness areas. Some people on that thread even took issue with peak sign-in logs (which are not geocaches.) I had never heard people complain about those before. It does make you stop and think, though. Peak sign-in logs have been around for 100 years or so, though--they are sort of traditional. But I can see why people would object to them as well.

I really don't think I am going to take this up as a hobby, so please don't jump all over my case about it! I am really excited, though, that I might possibly have a chance to get this summer job. It's full time and it's pretty good money for this area.

Now, if anyone has any helpful advice about geocaching please let me know.
