Possible wintry weekend ahead (Apr 10-11, 2009)
Since the temps in the valley hit the low 90s this week, I post this because sometimes we forget that spring weather in Arizona can be quite volatile.
So if you're planning on a weekend outing, please keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially for tomorrow night and Saturday. I've not seen any predictions for total accumulations yet, but currently it seems that there will be accumulating snow above 6000 feet, with snow levels dropping below 5000 feet on Saturday. Yavapai County mountains, Mogollon Rim and White Mtns are favored for the most snow.
There should also be some chilly rain showers in the lower elevations too.
Without any official forecast yet, my guess is we're only looking at a 3-6 inch type of event here, but it is mid-April, so that can catch people unprepared and make for dangerous situations quite quickly.

I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

We had probably less than an inch, but it melted quickly. However, we are usually later on in the storm cycles, so maybe we will get some more.

It sure seems the hammock hangin would be warmer than sleepin' on the ground in a tent?
: in these circumstances. Burrrrr.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.

using bottom insulation, such as what i use an underquilt and pad combo (the underquilt is 15oz and the pad is 3oz) I can sleep warmly down to about 25 degrees. it was close to freezing this night, not quite and id say about 34° and i was very snug. like a squirell in a rug.
this pic shows Drewboy giving the thumb up for his new te-wa made underquilt. his weighs ~13oz and is good to 35°

I was up the at the Canyon yesterday and today. The Village area and various points on the south rim had a solid 4 inches of fairly dense grommet and snow that might have had better than 1/2 an inch of moisture in it. Flag only got about 0.19" at the airport, but the Grand Canyon Airport reported 0.45".

Te-wa, the best part of your picture of Drewboy is the dog getting into his bag. Very sneaky

Grommet? I like that word, but don't know what it means! Explain, please. (Where I come from, in SoCal, a "grommet" is a newbie surfer.)jhodlof wrote:I was up the at the Canyon yesterday and today. The Village area and various points on the south rim had a solid 4 inches of fairly dense grommet
I think the storm passed to the north of us. All we got were clouds, wind, and a little spitting snow here and there. Glad to hear some parts of the state got some moisture, though.

I'm guessing he meant graupel ... which is a sort of snow "pellet". You can wiki it for a nice explanation.azbackpackr wrote:Grommet? I like that word, but don't know what it means! Explain, please. We had lots of that grommet/graupel/snow pellet stuff up on the Rincons on Saturday. Accumulated about 4" near the top. Sufficient for a small snow man and a great snowball fight - but wait, I've gotten ahead of myself. I need to get photos off my camera...

Snowing on Mt. Baldy today. I could see it while driving to Vernon.
