Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
taking the Pumkin trail/Bull Basin Loop to the top of Kendrick, camp at the nice spot near the cabin. Following PBaenzig's GPS route we can go counter-clockwise on Pumkin trail and return via Bull Basin Trail back to the vehicles. Roughly 12 miles total.

high 70's - high 40's
*you must pack in all the water you will need, none can be found along the way
I am going to make the drive up on Friday evening to car camp at the intersection of fr's 245 and 171.
This is a 3 hr. drive from the valley. Remember, this trip will include a camp at 10,200 feet - please be prepared and/or experienced hiking at such altitude. also, there can be a threat of lightning and foul weather (rain) during late summer months
btw, the fire tower is manned and visitors are welcome. the guy up top has been manning this tower for some 21 years. he has a load of great stories to tell, so spend some time up there!
for those who wish to meet in the e. valley for a carpool, let me know and we can arrange such things. im also leaning towards driving back to e. valley using the scenic hiway #3 (lake mary road) and then on to the Beeline hiway to stop for a late lunch at the Rimside Grille in Pine.

OK man, I'm in. If Te-wa's going, get ready for rain.
His record this year is unblemished. So I'm figuring that we'll need to carry around 6L or so of water?

Re: Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
I plan on attending.
I usually access Kendrick from the Bellemont (185) exit of I-40 to avoid the traffic snarls in Flag.
Also, the Harley 'Roadhouse Bar & Grill" at this exit has a terrific beer selection as well as a cook-your-own indoor grill; a fun place. One other trivial attraction..... they have the original 'no vacancy' sign from the Pine Breeze Inn on display (Easy Rider).

hey that's awesome Kurt. Funny thing too, I just got Easy Rider from Netflix yesterday. I watched it about 10 years ago and figure its time for a re-revisit. Same goes for The Big Lebowski, an annual favorite. Shut up, Donnie!
so is Sally coming too? what about Bonnie, and Randy.. maybe I should invite some of those that dont frequent the HAZ forum..

Re: Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
its worth mentioning... Andy, Mike, Kurt, Denny, Bob, Ed, Al, etc.. are great hiking companions. Many of you know this is the last shot at a high altitude training hike before we head out to Colorado's 13ers for a week. That's where the real mountains are, and i cant wait to get my first taste!

J, we're going into South San Juan wilderness to fish and camp at altitude. Ive not been up that high, only Humphries but the pics look phenomenal. Weminuche is equally cool, and on my to do list.
gonna soak up some natural hot tub water down at Pagosa springs afterwards... with champagne and cheese. the good life

Re: Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
As you are watching Easy Rider you should recognize quite a few places... actually the guys never actually seem to MOVE in the movie, as alot of the scenes are along I-40 near Flag, .. but some are Tucson, Cottonwood, Topock, Prescott, Wupatki, Sacred Mountain, Sunset Crater and even Valentine .. and what movie with southwestern locations would be complete without ... yep... Monument Valley.te-wa wrote:hey that's awesome Kurt. Funny thing too, I just got Easy Rider from Netflix yesterday. I watched it about 10 years ago and figure its time for a re-revisit. Re: Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
I picked up the Easy Rider DVD at Target or somewhere really cheap last year. Definitely some classic scenes and Jack Nicholson is priceless. The "making of" DVD included was interesting to watch. Fonda was the producer/director as well, and it was shot on a real shoestring budget. He talked about how they were getting stoned for real in most of those scenes. And about how he and Dennis Hopper had a falling out during making of the movie and stayed estranged for many years afterward.
The CO trip is gonna rock! And Kendrick too of course. I'm always up for a new place to try out (and new backpackers to meet). So it looks like we are leaning towards a friday night departure then and trailhead camp kind of deal? Works for me.

Re: Kendrick Peak overnight 7-11/12
If you listened to a lot of an 8 track, that means you must have been pretty good at fixing the tape! Squeek.. muffle... crosstalk... ..
And of course the magic spot on the tape where you could change track to hear the song you wanted.... Ahhh, the bad ole days!!
