Fishing Lower Salt River

Post by RidgebackMan »

I just moved here a few weeks ago, after reading a couple posts I determined The Lower Salt River would be alright for fishing (outside the city) if you like fly fishing I would rate this river a 8.5 out of 10 for fly fishing conditions. It was overall perfect, besides the slimey bottom which wasnt bad in certain parts and was real bad in other parts. Catch and release for me but every Rainbow I pulled out was a good 11-13 inches and they all looked extremely healthy. I spoke with a Forest Ranger on a trail to the river and he said they just stocked it with 4000 or something like that about a week ago.... So if your down by the bottom, or one of the first turn offs in the Tonto range then its great for the kids, lots of banks and lots of little trout. Now I waded up the river for about 3 miles where its in between parking areas and nobody was. A large blue heron(I think) followed me all day long across river. Pretty neat. I have pictures I will load. Overall it was a fun river to fish. Larger Trout for keeps seemed to be closer and closer to the lake.

Sand trout, too! They have evolved over the millenia to burrow under the sand in the river bottom when it goes dry...

Welcome to HAZ RidgebackMan ...

As a newcomer to the state, I think you'll find it useful to read the Weekly Fishing Report from the Arizona Game and Fish Dept.

Many of the reports contain personal insights, so you might also want to contribute your own experiences to the report.

You can find it here:
