Between hiking, planning to hike, playing with hiking equipment... then, talking about hiking... and reading about hiking and hikes yet to be done, then, writing about hikes they've done... along with writing/sharing hiking and non-hiking related thoughts in forums.... do the readers of this site really have jobs, and if so... do they honestly put in legitimate hours of work at their jobs?
and... is this a good thing... or, something in need of serious treatment?
It is obviously a hiking addiction...

I could have one of those if I cleaned my spare bedrooms of all the junk my kids left behind when they moved out. I go in those rooms, though, no more than once a month or less...
Maybe I should change back to my old signature...hmmm, I think I will...

Wow... you got it all to fit in just one room! I could do that... if the room were around 600 sq ft....snakemarks wrote:Does your gear have it's very own bedroom?

All of my climbing and backpacking gear is locked up in a closet. I couldn't care less if they steal my TV as long as that stuff is safe!!

Re: It is obviously a hiking addiction...
I had great aspirations, when I built my 2200 sq ft garage/workshop, that I'd have a place to store all my stuff (hiking/camping gear, reloading equipment, tools, etc.). Wife moved the car collection indoors then banished me from working out there, lest I hurt one of the classics ! My gear is currently stashed in a corner of a bedroom
... Maybe if I add on to the other side...

Re: It is obviously a hiking addiction...
I got tired of the crap on MySpace, and tired of all the dumb games on FaceBook and then got bord with surfing for stuff that I can't buy on Craigs List. So here I am on here talking about a subject that is 3 months old! I do have a job... sort of. Had a job where I worked 50 hrs a week and made too much money. LOL. Now I work 25 hrs a week, if I'm lucky and make hardley enough money to live. LOL. So I hike in the much free time I have and get myself into shape. The only problem... I'm on the damn computer too much!

I understand about the computer--I take 12 credits from NAU online, and when I get bored (or easily distracted) then I'm looking on here or FB, etc. (I got rid of the games on FB--there is a way to get rid of those posts without completely getting rid of your friends who play the dumb games.)
I also understand about part-time jobs. I drive a school bus. Works great for me, as a full-time college student, to work 15 hours a week. Good thing I also am able to get some money to live on and go to school or we'd starve...
My husband and I were living down in Yuma for 4 months winter of '08-'09, (we live in a snowy part of AZ) and when we came home last spring I made a pledge to myself I would not work indoors. Have pretty much kept it except working part-time as a motel clerk for awhile, but that was in the evenings! This summer I hope to work at the dude ranch where I worked last summer. Getting paid to take people hiking...

That would be a job! My cousin works on a dude rach up in CO. He take greenhorns on trail rides. My family grew up with horses. Acuallt, when I graduated high school, I moved to ID and worked as a cattle hand on a rach. Would love to find a job where I ride horses all day or hike.

Re: It is obviously a hiking addiction...
They don't let me ride the horses, although they have 50 head. Last summer they promised to take me riding but it had to be when I was off the clock. I take guests hiking, and teach them leather shop, wood shop, archery, shooting, and also an occasional evening kids' program. I also take care of fixing the fishing poles and maintaining the mtn. bikes as best I can. I started to learn fly fishing last summer, but they didn't have time to finish teaching me all about it, I just learned to cast.
The horse ops is a different dept. I can ride ok, but would not want to work in horse ops since you have to buck hay twice a day, and carry the saddles quite a ways out of the barn and saddle and unsaddle about 10 or 15 horses every day. I would be at the chiropractor's every week. I can't do heavy work like that. Wrangling is for kids (and old cowboys who want something "easy"). I just can't do all that lifting. You also have to take care of their hooves and also be able to handle them when they become fractious, as even some in the dude string can get uppity. Their dude string does not look too bad at this place. They are old horses, of course, but not bad. They also breed horses there, and have some gorgeous quarter horses and draft horses. They hire wranglers every summer, and there is some housing (bunkhouse) and meals: http://www.hiddenmeadow.com
