Floyd Dominy, who once proposed dams inside what is now Grand Canyon National Park, died last week at age 100.

All things must pass, much like Floyd. Someday, if the Dam isn't holding any water it might be taken down. Though, I think the Hoover will get there before the Glen Canyon.

I googled him a few months ago and was surprised to learn that he was still alive. His depiction in "Cadillac Desert" and other such works was fascinating. It's easy to see how he grew so powerful and got so much built. I don't know when, if ever, folks with that much power will seriously re-evaluate how much of it really should have been done.

Another good book is Encounters with the Archdruid, by John McPhee. http://hikearizona.com/books.php?REV=1&ID=958

I'm a huge John McPhee fan, and I thought his profile of Dominy was excellent, but its scope was more limited. The Dominy section in "Cadillac Desert" could almost stand alone as biography.
