Post by hhwolf14 »

FR 42 into the Cave Creek area in Coronado National Forest is closed due to the Horseshoe Fire. Some of the other areas may be accessible, but there is a lot of smoke :(

May 30, 2010 – 9:55 p.m. The Horseshoe Fire is burning in the Douglas Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest. The fire is approximately 1,400 acres.

The fire remained active today but did not grow significantly in size. Firefighters are attempting to keep the fire out of the South Fork of Cave Creek Canyon. Indirect line is being constructed around an approximately 35,000-acre area utilizing natural barriers, where possible, for burn-out operations, should they become necessary. Efforts are being made to minimize resource damage from fire suppression efforts. A fire protection assessment of the residences and structures between Portal and the Southwestern Research Station has begun.

The Incident Command Post is located next to the Chiricahua Desert Museum in Rodeo, NM at the junction of NM Hwy 80 & Portal Road 533, which is located 7 miles east of Portal, AZ.

Public Meeting: Approximately 75 local residents attended a public meeting at Portal Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday evening (May 29). Wildfire suppression, strategies and activities were discussed and residents concerns were addressed at the meeting.

Closures: Cave Creek Road (Forest Rd. 42) is closed from the Forest Boundary southwest of Portal, AZ to the northwest junction of Portal/Paradise Road (42B). The Portal/Paradise Road remains open.

Location:
East side of the Chiricahua Mountains
Nearest town is Portal, AZ

Cause: Human caused, under investigation

Resources Assigned: Approximately 650 personnel: 19 firefighting crews; 27 engines; 3 large helicopters, 1 medium helicopter, 1 light helicopter; and 8 water tenders.

Structures Threatened: No structures threatened at this time.

Additional Fire Information: can be viewed at http://inciweb.org/
