Upper Tonto Campground

Post by Nighthiker »

I camped out Aug. 28th to the 30th at Upper Tonto Campground. A thunderstorm moved in on the early evening of the 28th, it included heavy rain and hail. Thursday was partly cloudy. I hiked the Horton Creek trail and explored Tonto Creek including the fish hatchery. Upper Tonto Creek is located alongside a paved road that provides access to the fish hatchery. Campground feaures include drinking water, picnic tables, fire rings and barbeque grill and non-flush toilets. There are nine sites and the fee is 8.00 a night. Located to the west of the campground after crossing the bridge over Tonto Creek is the Horton day use area which includes grills, picnic tables and nonflush toilets. This is also the parking lot for the Horton Creek trail. The picnic area was very lush and I would recommend a visit.
