Chevelon Area
Hi Phrank,
Chevelon Canyon is one big momma. This hike is in the west canyon, on the Mogollon Rim. Chevelon Crossing to Chevelon lake is a good hike. Try it in the late spring or very early summer, we went in late summer of '98 and the water was just a trickle. This is about a six mile hike one way, there are no real trails, at least we didnt find one. We just hiked along, through, and above the creek by the ridge line at times. My son-in-law and I left my truck at the lake and took his to the crossing. We stopped about half way down (or was that up?)
and camped for the night. There are a few elevation changes of a couple hundred feet, a couple were fairly steep, and the walk out from the lake is about 700' uphill on a gravel trail/road. I recommend soaking the shirt and hat in the lake before heading out. All in all it's a nice hike, in my book you can't go wrong being surrounded by lots of pines and wildlife. I can give directions if your intrested, just send me a PM.
