HAZ Fall Photo Workshop

EDIT 9-13-10: After hiking Kachina Trail with Jake yesterday, we determined the original planned photographing spot isn't very good in the evening... Nearby ridges block the best of the evening light. So, the new, tentative plan is Hart Prairie Saturday evening. After shooting through sunset there, we'll hop on fr522 off Snowbowl road and find a place to car camp near Freidlen Prairie. Sunday morning we'll wake up bright and early (more like dark and early) and hike no more than 2 miles on the Kachina Trail to find some aspens and meadows. Plans still subject to change, of course, as we do more scouting.

Hey HAZ photographers!

Jake (hippiepunkpirate), Jon (jonnybackpack) and I are putting together an autumn photography workshop/group hike/camping trip at the Peaks, October 9th and 10th.

The plan, as of now, is to meet up late morning on Saturday, October 9th, and drive to the Freidlein Prairie trailhead. Hike the lower portion of the Kachina Trail and photograph the beautiful Kachina meadows in the evening. Car-camp somewhere nearby Saturday night, wake up pre-sunrise Sunday morning and head to Lockett Meadow. Photograph the Lockett Meadow area for sunrise, then head into the Inner Basin to capture the rest of the morning light.

Although this is obviously organized like a normal group hike, the focus will be on photography. Bring a camera and tripod! We'll be visiting prime locations during the best light, so there should be plenty of opportunity for some awesome photos... Not to mention the sharing of knowledge from fellow photographers ;)

I wish it was like this years round up here, or for more than the few months it seems to be. Nice that we're getting this now, but you'll get your color. It is supposed to cool off next week, and that might be the end of the happy times...until the snow falls.

So I'm sure this is a minor point, but wherever the camping happens, I'll have my chainsaw with me, so there will be no shortage of firewood to keep the heater on high.

You're talkin' my language. I am going to commit to this event and I'll be counting on a warm fire.

ok, I can't believe I'm going to do this "before" sunrise thing. I haven't had to get up before the roosters very often since I left MT for the last time in '87.

I look forward to meeting you all; that in and of itself is a reason to say I'll be there.

I didn't get my GC SK fix, and next Saturday may be a good day to do it, so I might do that instead. Is anyone coming up early on Friday to camp?

This week is going to be difficult it appears, so I've officially moved into the "Pumpkin, I Can't Make It" column. I'll look forward to reading about the adventure and seeing the photos!

Yesterday I headed north and met up with Joel (he is on Fall break and staying up there for the week, with no internet access) The storms blocked the I-40 at the Hart Prairie section, with no word if hart prairie road itself was closed. ( * The ADOT website seemed to be pointing to it being cleaned as of this morning and HP is a go *).We decided to abandon the Flag area for the day and shoot in Sedona while the clean up was on. (boy did the area take a beating )
I had to get back to the Valley but Joel is in Flag today, I believe with Jake, giving a thorough check of the area to see if the HP area is accessible and photograph-able. I will post a final post of meeting times, locations and any and all other info later this evening.

Without a doubt Humphrey's will retain all its snow...the lows tonight and tomorrow are going to keep it around.

Quite a bit has melted on the south side, not sure for the west...

I agree it def wont look as snow covered, but there we be some snow left...(positive toughts! )

At this time of year, the temperature of the ground is a bigger issue than the air temp as far as the snow melting goes.

an early first snow such as this can't last long as the ground temperature is too high to sustain it.
