Grand Canyon over Thanksgiving?
Ever the flip-flopper, I'm thinking of the South Bass as a packing trip, 1 or 2 nights, not sure about days or specifics, but thought I would see if there was interest. I'm flexible to days, but a target area around mid to late November is good. The Tanner is another possibility. I expect this time of year is easy to get a permit, but I may be way off. I'll inquire on 10/27 when up there to do the Grandview.

Re: Grand Canyon over Thanksgiving?
I am very interested. The problem is it will be tough for me to get away for more then a couple of days. Did you have any luck securing any overnight permits?
I might end up staying at the Maswik for one night and then day hiking either Hermits or Grandview. I'd really like to go for multiple days but the stars will have to aline. Ever since I read Grand Obsession I have been itching to get back into the canyon on the more secluded trails. I'll cross my fingers on working something out.

I neglected to notice that the South Bass requires rough roads to access it, does anyone who responded to me have a high-clearance 4 wheel drive? I operate a Honda Civic.

I talked to the GC backcountry office. Hermit is out, but Tanner is OK, as is Boucher for the 27th. How does that sound?
Here's the catch, I'm hesitant to buy permits ahead of time with the weather 3 weeks out being iffy.

Re: Grand Canyon over Thanksgiving?
Because of weather variability, the holiday weekend and not wanting to buy permits that I won't use if things aren't nice enough to want to backpack, I plan to just do this and decide as the time approaches and get permits essentially for what ever is available.

I'm still doing this if things are good this Saturday. I'm canceling it to get it off the calendar.

Wish I could join you but I am going to be doing the family-type road trip to the Grand Canyon, complete with dog and 2-year-old, either Friday or Saturday.
