Fall Foliage Watch

Post by azrocks »

I thought it would be good to have a place where folks could keep us
up to date on where and when the fall foliage is at its best.

The north side of Escudilla is very bright. Sheeps Crossing is gorgeous. Otherwise color in White Mountains is spotty. I think the leaves are falling as soon as they change. Thus the forest floor is much prettier than the trees themselves.

Colors

Post by montezumawell »

We left Rimrock Thursday and spent Thursday night and Friday night near Tusayan. No color on Hwy 180 going up to the Rim. Then drove over to Lee's Ferry. Nothing resembling color along the East RIM drive. Left Lee's Monday morning. No color along Hwy 89A through the Kaibab Plateau. Went to the top of the Jacbo's Lake Lookout Tower. Some teeny-tiny colorations in the swales in that limestone ridge. The lookout is a Fredonia native who claims to know all sorts of "inside" information from the squirrels and the willy-worms. ANywa, he thinks the colors on the North Rim will peak on or about this coming weekend and week.

Then we drove up to Panguitch and Bryce. There's some light snow on Brianhead and the CIrcleville and Tushar Mountains. Maybe a skiff of snow on Mt. Dutton. You can see the caspen color bands on those distant mountains from many miles away. They might be at their peak. The cottonwoods along the Sevier River are probably at their peak of color. Locals in Panguitch told us the color came on real fast, just in the last few days. There are some aspen trees in Red Canyon that have turned as well.

It is raining and trying to snow already at Bryce Canyon. Heavy cloud cover. Looks like the type of weather that would make any self respecting tree turn colors real fast.

That's all we know.

We just got in from Sedona a little bit ago. There was no color in town. Everybody we talked to in town said that it had just started to cool down the last few days. We didn't drive up the canyon this trip, but from our room we had a great view of Schnebly Hill Road. There didn't appear to be any color up at the top of the rim. We did see a lot of brown, especially the manzanita along the Broken Arrow trail. A few of the junipers along the trail were nearly devoid of bark, too. But the good news is there still far more green than brown.

I have not seen any color yet. We will be taking 180 up to the canyon next Monday so I will report. The North Rim should turn first before anything else. I will also be on the rim south of Winslow this weekend--don't know if there are any aspins over there.

Another update

Post by montezumawell »

After leaving S. Utah yesterday, we drove into Flagstaff from Page. We could see a glimmer of color on the NW flank of the Peaks. It appeared rather small but would seem to indicate that the color change has begun there. There did not appear to be any coloration on the apprroach to Lockett Meadow, what we saw was way, way out in the back of the beyond. The first clouds of this storm were draped over the top of the peaks and we fancied we caught glimpses of a skiff of snow up there. Hopefully, when the coulds clear we will be looking at a nice white mountain up there.
We really hope HAZ members use this particular topic to provide as "up to the minute" information as possible. Thanks for your time and effort in doing so.

We were up in Flag this weekend. REally no color at all. Many of the aspens appear to be going from green to brown and skipping the color all together. It looks like there may be a little color in the higher elevations on the San Fran Peaks on the west side. (off Highway 180)

I did not go up 180 but I did come back to Flagstaff on 89 today and there looked to be good color on the north side of the peaks and Elden. I think this weekend will be good. MP

The Peaks

Post by GeorgAZ »

I talked to the ranger at the peaks station in Flagstaff yesterday. She said that the North side was full color and the rest should be full this weekend and the coming week. Sedona is just staring in the upper canyon. Looks like Flag tomorrow!

Or, as Marge Simpson pronounces it: "Foilage"

I was at the Mount Peeley trail-head on Friday and what few deciduous trees exist up there, were in full fall color.

Highway 180 is a great drive for color so far. It looks like Locket's Meadow would be gorgeous, too! So happy to see Fall color!!

Drove back from the North Rim today, nice color anywhere you look. San Francisco Peaks had good spots, Kendrick, etc. Beautiful on the North Rim. Probably saw 100 deer between Jacob's Lake Lodge and the N Rim.
