Tabacco products on the trail?
I have no idea if this has ever been brought up, but I'm going to ask. How does everyone feel about using tabacco products on the trail? Smoking while hiking? Chewing while hiking? Just a curiosity. How many HAZ members smoke or chew? I quit smoking... for 4 months and then picked it back up again, for umfteenth time.
And I have been known to chew sometimes.

I'm currently frying eggs, but no bacon. It would be a welcome addition to breakfast.

Re: Tabacco products on the trail?
I say, "who cares?" I had a cigarette on top of Black Top Mesa today and it was awesome-- unhealthy but awesome. If someone had happened to come up to me out of nowhere and told me I was being inappropriate, I would have told them to save that nonsense for the city. Seriously, we're willing to hike long distances up steep, rocky, and painful terrain but we can't handle someone smoking a cigarette? Ridiculous.... and I rarely smoke during a hike and when I do-- the butts are always packed out and its never around people. People need to stop expecting the world to work the way they want it to-- especially in nature. I think that's what's inappropriate.

Re: Tabacco products on the trail?
Almost 4 years ago I took an out of town buddy of mine on a hike to Reavis Ranch from the north (my 2nd triplog on HAZ, btw). When we got to the junction of the Reavis and Plow Saddle trails, there was a storm coming our way from the west that started to hit us. My buddy at this point said, "Man, I am not in the mood for this right now.", and pulled out a bowl and started tokin' up. I've never had any illegal drug, but I was confused that he would do this in the middle of a pretty strenous hike (we did it as an 18 mile day hike). I asked him if that tired you out like an alcohol buzz, and he said not at all. On our way out, we ran into a group of backpackers on their way in and the one guy had a half full whiskey flask tucked like a shoulder holster on his shoulder strap. Not sure how that wouldn't make a long hike even longer....

Smoke em if you got em! I have hiked many places outside the US where smoking seemed like it was the norm on the mountain. I have watched porters with very large loads blow past us like a train just puffing away and seen guides very high up doing the same.

Tabasco is great on most everything to spice it up - especially in the morning on the scrambled eggs or in the Bloody Mary.
Oh Tobacco?
Never mind.

I think we should start a HAZ hiking club for the smoking pariah. We can have our own patch with a cig and a taco on it.

Cigarettes don't bother me. Even being in a car when someone is smoking does not bother me.
Just for the record.
