I just did Flatiron last Saturday - man that place can get COLD if you pick the wrong day. That was the second coldest I've ever experienced it. (Last year in February we did it - that was just brutally cold. Ice on the rocks and everything.)
Is it me or is that trail becoming more popular all the time? Especially with novice hikers and out of towners.
I think that a lot of people that start it have no idea what they are getting into. Some of the comments I hear from first timers are always good for a laugh. I guess you have to admire their pluck and determination - but you'd hope that some of these folks do a little more research on the trail they are embarking on before they actually put foot to trail.
Funny story (sort of): once we crested the saddle and started toward flatiron, by hiking buddy smacked his face on an outcroping of rock that kind of extends over the trail - chipped his tooth. After some initial concern about his welfare we eventually started laughing about it. The rest of the way down was 'Look out for that rock!' - very amusing.
