Reavis canyon to Picketpost (azt #18)

Post by te_wa »

this is an overnight backpacking trip, cross-posted from the ABC site on Meetup.com

there seems to be a full calendar on ABC, and most active backpackers are signed up on other trips prior to me posting this one, therefore the interest level has not taken off the way i could have expected..
so, im cross posting this trip 'cause i know there are some HAZ ppl that might join me for:

This trip follows a passage of the Arizona Trail along the scenic Reavis Canyon, where we follow part of the route Elisha Reavis used to carry his produce from his ranch atop the hill, down to Superior for trade and sale.
Starting at two points, this trip will be a car exchange and both parties starting from either end will meet in the middle of the 19 mile hike at the confluence of Reavis canyon and Wood Camp canyon (see map) http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?ZTN=2432&Z=8&M=3

We will meet at a Lowe's in Mesa, then exchange vehicles to drive to each individual trailhead. A high clearance vehicle (like my Montero Sport) will be used for the upper trail at Roger's Trough.
Each team will start the hike at either end of this trail, and camp in the middle - one group hiking downhill from Roger's Trough, the other more "hardy" group hiking uphill from Picketpost. There appears to be water in the canyons after these recent rains but I encourage you to carry all that you will need until we arrive at camp - 2 to 4 quarts depending on your needs.

Exciting and breathtaking views on much of the trip, and the terrain varies enough to pass through a couple of life zones, keeping things interesting. Some of this trip will follow and cross old roads. This trip definately has some rugged terrain and the difficulty will demand that attendees be fit and able, with prior desert hiking experience a plus.

I encourage the use of map and compass. you can also download GPS tracks if you prefer that method of navigation: http://hikearizona.com/location_g.php?GPS=9850

Jan 15, 2011... it's listed way at the top of the page under Event Date.

Can't say as I ever noticed that part anywhere but in the actual posts before, so don't feel bad if you missed it.

Sorry, I won't be able to backpack over both days so no can do.

However, being able to hike one day Or the other, I'm keeping that weekend open for now... If weather co-operates at all and Mt Peeley is clear for a few days around then and I have anticipated support, I hope to recreate Joe's bailout route of Nov '09 in it's entirety.

if anyone else wants to join us, we only have 3 so may just do an out and back. or, do an entirely different trip. i would like at least 4 ppl signed up so we can do the '2 teams of two' method with the car exchange.

there is now officially 4 ppl signed up.
i guess we should stick together instead of doing two from the top, two from the bottom? anyway, we can still do a car shuttle and all hike from Roger's (read: downhill mostly)
where the heck is Wally and Joe* on this one?

*i need you man, i got a lumix g-1 and someone has to show me how to use this damn thing
