East-Central New Mexico

Post by VVebb »

Does anybody know anything about hiking (or other recreation) in east-central New Mexico? My brother is in the Air Force, and just got word that he (and the wife and babies) will be spending the next four years at the USAF base near Clovis, NM. I'm wondering what there is to do for outdoorsy recreation when I go visit him.

New Mexico is full of little mountain ranges that look fun to explore. I found traveling around there that you could get info and maps at the ranger stations. Have not been to Clovis, however.

That far east area is closer to Texas than the rest of New Mexico, but it isn't too far of a drive to those mountains and places like the Guadalupe Mountain NP, the Gila, the Sangres, and so forth, and so on.

depends on the time of year... some great winter canyon hiking around Alamogordo... great summer time temps in the mountains around Cloudcroft (lots of mountain biking tracks and a variety of hiking). Guadalupe NatlPark is exceptional in the fall.
