Elk
The past couple of camping trips on the rim I noted the elk are bugling. I don't know how much longer they will do this but it is a very neat experience. The do this mostly in the late afternoon and twilight. On my recent campout the did it during the night of a full moon. While hiking at night attempting to locate the elk to photograph I was unsuccessfull. Tired I laid on the ground and was awakened by an elk bugling about thirty feet away and silhouetted by moonlight early in the morning. I did not get the picture, I was overwhelmed by this experience.

Elk encounter
That is so cool! In what area did you have this close encounter? I haven't even seen an elk yet - I guess I need to be gettin' up there!

Month ago they were bugling around and northwest of Woods Canyon Lake. I also hear them north of Christopher Creek and my recent encounter was South East of Ponderosa Campground apx. 1/4 mile. Ponderosa Campground just closed but you can park at the turn off. There is also a forest road from Little Green Valley (405A) to the forest road that goes to Bear Flat (405). Find a suitable location, park and listen. Good Luck !
