Collins Spring to Kane Gulch - May 22-26, 2011

Post by PLC92084 »

Planning a 5-day, 4-night excursion to Grand Gulch, UT. Start date is looking to be May 22 . Starting point will be Collins Spring and exit will be Kane Gulch (easier to arrange shuttle if necessary). Actual starting date is dependent on availability of permits (won't know until last part of Feb). Group size will be no larger than 8-10 explorers put together from several hiking/adventure sites. This will be planned as a trip suitable to fit and experienced backpackers. Distance is anticipated to be approximately 35-45 miles (although the goal is to explore the canyons and ruins). Feel free to PM if you have any questions...

Distance is anticipated to be approximately 35-45 miles
I'd say closer to the higher range....I ended up doing close too 50 miles with all the extra exploring. It really is a pumpkin cool area with great places to camp...Water will be an issue... if its there... it clogged 6 0f 7 of our filters.

That's a high filter failure rate!! Were you guys using coffee filters to pre-screen the sludge!?

I expected filtering to be problematic. I might bring an old Pur Scout with a spare cartridge and kill it off. Availability is more worrisome.

I hear that... Don't have to worry about filtering water if you can't find it. I've gotten differing opinions on availability (kind of like the weather...). I'm continuing to research this and monitor the weather. So far, it sounds like from Polly's Canyon to Kane Gulch there should be some steady springs (even if they have diluted concrete flowing from them).

I'll be in Utah earlier in May and looking at doing a loop in Slickhorn etc. Have fun, if I find out any water info I'll post it when I return.

A bit last-minute to be sure but there is an additional opening due to a cancellation... If anyone has the time and inclination to trek Grand Gulch, hit me up for details...

I better start dehydrating some food before it's too late. I couldn't sell Mrs. big_load on the opening. :(

I tried to sell Mrs. Bart01 and even tried to bribe her by offering to carry her water as well, but no go. Ok so maybe there was a little thing about getting a week off work on 1 weeks notice. :)
@big_load
I don't get back 'til the day before you get in so I had to make the homemade beef jerky before I left. :D It turned out so good I hope it makes it through the car ride there. :sl: The rye hardtack won't taste right w/out the beef jerky.

Just drove over the top coming and going but could see pools in Bullet Canyon by the road. Seems has been rather wet in Utah per their normal and although warming up quite a bit I would think water situation would be ok.

Forecast is well below seasonal averages with a chance of rain Monday and Tuesday. Hmmm, I might need to bring more clothes.
