Scary NRA Militia types?!!
Hi All,
I was on a beautiful hike this past saturday morning on the Bluffs Springs Trail in the Sups. The Temperature cooperated, the sun was behind clouds, there was a nice breeze and of course anyone who's been out there knows the scenery is increadible.
The only weird thing about the hike was on the way back to the trailhead at the end of my hike probably within a half mile of the peralta trailhead, I ran into these two guys that were all suited up for war games or something. Camo, Knives strapped to gear suspenders, a pistol at the older man's side who had so much facial hair, you could barely see his face.
As I passed them with my hiking poles out the older guy said to me all suprised, "Ski Poles?!!!" I quickly explained they helped the old knees on the way down after I noticed he had a gun at his side. I pretty much smiled and nodded then continued on my way.
Now I'm all for everyone's right to bear arms and all, but seeing this kind of freaked me out. I know it's legal to carry handguns in Arizona and that's fine, but I was thinking there isn't a very large reason to carry a gun out there, especially if you are with another full grown adult male.
I have no idea what their reason would be for bringing those types of weopons out there, and the whole incident was a bit disturbing. I was glad that I encountered these yahoo's close to the trailhead. Anyone else run into any of these gun toting militia type weirdo's?

They're probably gone by now. Either law enforcement has gone down there or they wised up and realized that a good number of hikers travel through there and its not a safe place to do whatever they're doing.

Me too...I'd much rather be the windshield..then the bug. I was taught in martial arts to be defensive...one of my favorite defensive moves is to be offensiveWild Bill wrote:I chose to be the aggressor, instead of the victim

As far as guns go....I don't carry because my shotguns and black powder rifle are just to heavy to hike with.

I personally know someone who has done that several times, both in AZ and UT. There is always a lot of cheap Walmart camping gear left behind as well, and food, trash, etc. The government does not necessarily go back in and clean that stuff up.

Who would have thought. This is another one of those "why I hang out here" posts. No one can make this stuff up--thanks for the laugh!
Definitely didn't make this one up! I can go on to say that after my friend observed the helicopters hovering over a certain mountain in Utah, and carefully eyeballing the area (which he knew fairly well) he went up there that night. His girlfriend told me he left without a word at 3 a.m. She had no idea what he was up to. She went to work, and returned to find their place completely full of drying pot. They were very happy (and had a little extra cash, just from friends) for about 3 months! And that was the second time he had pulled off that particular stunt. I am telling you, when they find it, they don't take all of it.

We have 32,391 members.
Lets say 15% are unarmed.
Now they're paranoid, because they hike at least once a week...unarmed.
So 4,858 members need to rent a gun from me for the low cost of $20 a day.
At 52 weekends a year times 4,858 members @ $20 a day comes out to.....
..carry the one...
factor in 3 or 4 may be shot at and stop hiking....
$5,052,320 a year +or- $137.50
Any biz partners out there....

I want a commission on legal defense referrals, I think this scheme is going to need quite a bit.
