Ack! I can still taste the glue from those stamps. My mom was so cruel.
We still have the Blakely glasses, I love them.
Target shooting at Bell and Scottsdale Rd. and when I was really young my dad drove me up into Echo Canyon on Camelback to shoot guns just to hear how loud they were up there.
On Invergordon just south of McDonald Dr. was the Maytag zoo. It was all donated to start the new Phx. Zoo.
Our family home was on the NW corner of Scottsdale Rd. and McDonald.

What? She was cruel indeed if she made you lick those Green Stamps. My mom had a sponge to use. We would save them up in a box, then do a bunch of them at one time using the sponge.

Did the Maytag zoo have live washing machines? :D

Yep and during mating season it was pretty loud.
The Maytags and yes those Maytags, were the ones that had the nine Arabian Oryxs that became Operation Oryx at the Phx. Zoo in 62.

My favorite exhibit was the feral cat house.

Is that where all those sad Maytag repairmen ended up? I have always wondered about that...

That explains everything !! (well almost...) The feral cat house (isn't Nevada the only place that has those now!?) completes the picture...

Bob Maytag's nephew Fritz bought the struggling Anchor Steam Brewery in San Francisco and basically invented the modern microbrewery industry. But I'm really just using that to segue to the topic of beer in Arizona. I remember the old A-1 Brewery back when A-1 was a pretty good beer - before the old man died and the quality went downhill and it was bought by Carling. I'm not quite old enough to remember Apache Beer except from tales and legends.

I didn't know about the Anchor Steam connection..cool.
When my wife's dad retired from the city of Phx., the party was held at the A-1 brewery. I guess quanity, not quality was they're main concern.
If you ever get your hands on an Apache beer bottle, I've heard they're worth some serious money.

here in the valley? i musta missed that one. i do, however remember U-Totem and still have a plastic coffee mug from there. for some reason, they sold them to fill up slurpies.
and then there was the A.J. Bayless country store, where you could buy junk with your Gold Bond stamps.. (1978ish)

Nimbus of Tucson has re-issued that beer. I read a story about it a couple weeks ago. Its also sold at Costco and other retailers. I wonder if its any good... http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1103/61956

From what I recall, it was OK, but it wasn't any better than Coors. My guess is Nimbus is brewing a "replica" and with their reputation I would suspect it should be pretty good.

I think Blakely's was sold and gone by the late '60's,

Well, I had a plaid lunchbox with matching Thermos. Glass inside that Thermos. It broke one day when I dropped it on the way to school, and I ran all the way home crying. My mother was very comforting, and said she would buy me a new one. Then she took me to school. I was late. She did buy me a new Thermos, but couldn't find a plaid one, alas.

And I had a red Schwinn 3-speed bicycle with hand brakes. Got it for my birthday when I was 8.

I also had (and still possess) an actual Oscar Meyer Weiner Whistle with which you can blow the four note tune on this ad from 1965: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNddW2xm ... re=related

I will sell the Oscar Meyer Wiener Whistle. Just send me 50 bucks, and it's yours. Otherwise it goes on ebay this summer. Looks just like this one:

My first car was a '53' chev convert called "Sweet Nothing" and we could drive around town all evening for $2.00 worth of gas (had to take up a collection to get the 'gas money').

..and also Double Gold Bond Stamps. I not only remember but I still own to this day a beginner set of seven Spalding Golf Clubs (2 woods/5 irons) with original bag that I redeemed in 1964 from the local S&H Green Stamp retail store in McAllen, TX , with my mom's extra books of S&H Green Stamps. The first and last time I used this set to play nine holes of golf was just after moving to AZ in Spring'04. I hate golf! ( I can typically loose four $balls$ in nine holes).

Well, no wonder you took up hiking and backpacking as you obviously must have spent most of your golfing career in the rough already! :sl:
