Any good rapelling spots near Phoenix?

Post by alaskangriz »

I have been rapelling for numerous years and now that I have come down to Arizona I havn't found any good places to go rapelling. I want to take a few beginners to a good site, one that we wont have to climb a class 5 to get to. I think that rapelling is a good way to start out climbing. This introduces several factors like fear and trust that is important in climbing. I think a person needs to know what he or she is capable of before climbing. So if anyone can think of any good spots where we can either class 3 or 4 to the anchor points it would be great.

Visit REI and or the Tempe Rock Gym. REI has publications with regards to rock climbing, check out the publication regarding Queen Creek east of Superior AZ.

Drop in at the Arizona Mountaineering Club meeting
Monday 25th March, 7:00pm at the Los Olivos center,
2802 E Devonshire Dr., 28th St, just north of Indian School.
Meet loads of people who go up and down ropes.

I second the AMC! They are the people in the know. Very well respected.

Coon's Bluff

Post by olesma »

A good rappelling area is out near the Salt River Recreation Area. A little spot just off the main road called Coon's Bluff. It has parking about 150 yrds from the cliff, (it is a popular camping spot so there are some picknick tables nearby as well). The climb to the top is simple and not too long, and there are a few bolts on top to tie off on. The only drawback is that if you go on the wrong day - there are quite a few people there. But the cliff is large and you can easily accomodate 4 to 5 ropes at the same time.

It's not much of a rappel - but it is a great one for beginners.

Oh, yea - it's about 120 ft high.

Another great rappel that is totally worth the haul is to take your ropes into Havasupai canyon - the climb down to Moony falls is pretty impressive, but it is an absolute blast to rappel down - easily the funnest and most challenging rappel I have ever done. (200 ft or so)

But it does suck to haul those ropes the 11 miles in to the site.

Rappeling sites

Post by alaskangriz »

Thanks everyone. I did go over to REI and was talking with a few of the employees over there and a customer started in on the conversation and gave a few sites over near camelback and also said to talk with the people over at the hiking shack. So I headed over there and they were helpful. They told me of a few places on lookout mountian. Thanks
