3 Campers Issued Citations for Illegal Fire in Beaver Creek
Written by Dwight DEvelyn, YCSO Media Relations Coordinator
Fire infractions will be strictly enforced
On June 16, 2011, at approximately 8:15 AM, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a reported illegal fire in the Beaver Creek area of Lake Montezuma. Deputies located a witness near Montezuma Castle Road who directed them down to an area known as “Chicken Jackson Flats.” The deputies also met up with a US Forest Service Fire Crew called to investigate the reported smoke plume. Deputies eventually located the smoke source along a section of the creek and contacted 3 male subjects around a fire containing a log smoldering over a fire pit. Fortunately, the smoldering log had not ignited any brush or debris outside the pit.
The 3 subjects were advised of current Stage 1 Fire Restrictions and each was cited by YCSO Forest Patrol deputy for Reckless Burning. A US Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer arrived and cited the trio for the illegal fire and causing the response of a fire suppression team.
The subjects were released at the scene. All claimed no knowledge of the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions. Involved were 2 adult teens from Camp Verde and a 21-year-old man from Phoenix.
This notice serves as reminder that illegal fire activity will not be tolerated. Please share this information with your family, neighbors, friends, and those visiting our wilderness areas. With everyone’s help, we can all play a part in preventing a fire tragedy.

Ignorance is no excuse for the law. There are signs everywhere, fires are plastered all over the news, you can't go anywhere in public without hearing something about the fires and fire danger, yet they say they were unaware of any restrictions? Puulease... They should have gotten jail time.SkyIslandHiker wrote:All claimed no knowledge of the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions.

I know when Jim is being sarcastic. That is pretty much always, so not difficult...
