The Sky is Falling!!

Post by Cakewalk »

The annual Leonid meteor shower is going to peak on the evenings of nov 18th and 19th.
The weather so far looks good.

They are predicting a storm this year. Imagine seeing hundreds or even thousands of shooting stars per hour! You will need to get away from the city lights.

Last year, Mrs. Cakewalk and I went out towards lake pleasant - it was pretty spactacular- even thow the sky was pretty cloudy, we still saw at least 3 per minute.

For the last meteor shower, a group of friends and myself got together out in the McDowell Mtns with some coolers, some snacks, and music and we sat out there til 2:30am!! It was great. Would anyone be interested in doing something like that?? Yes, you are very tired the next day at work, but it was so worth it!! No one complained.

Count me in! The 18th is my birthday, and I can't think of a better way to spend the evening - no work the next day, either!

Happy Birthday cactuscat!

Mine's the 15th.

I would like to join all of you, but too tired at work as it is. The boss doesn't appreciate me slobbering on the keyboard.

I'm sure Hooli will have a comment now.

According to the "handy Leonid Flux Estimator," from a mountain top in Phoenix you should see a peak of 3,010 per hour at 3:20AM.

I saw it from Sedona last year and it was pretty amazing. If you haven't seen it before, it's easily worth waking up for.

Hey, I was out in that area too! North side of Toms Thumb... Very peaceful place to watch 'shooting stars'...

Happy Birthday Cactuscat :!:

And to you too.....Buick Regal. How old ya gonna be? Maybe we should pitch in and buy you a slobber rag.....that's what Bloodhound owners carry around in the show ring with them and if you're standing next to one you pray it doesn't shake its head! :yuk: Hmmmmmm....is there a resemblance? Nah, you don't have four feet. :gun:

My birthday is the 16th, so I usually take advantage of this event. My advice is to get out of the city if possible. The best year for me was camping at Reavis Ranch on the peak night. If you can't get out for a backpacking trip, at least head for the parks on the outskirts of town-White Tanks, Cave Creek, etc

Me? I'll probably be somewhere out in the Rincons :)

I wasn't planning on it, but we could if enough people want to get together...
I'm always up for pleasant socializing in the great outdoors!!

We just need a place to get together, food, drinks... nothing fancy, simple and easy!!

Any suggestions??

sure you'll be ready for something like that after your excursion?

Sounds like it going to be a rough one.

I bet Randy will go for this idea! He loves sliding on his arse down Siphon Draw in the dark!

If I can get out of work the next day, I may be up for this. We're not too far from the McD's, so if anything gets put together for there, we may try to make it!

I was hoping for something a little further away from the city lights.
