Visiting in Nov/Jan

Post by Mona Richardson »

Hi.

Am coming to the Prescott area of Arizona between November 20, 2002; and possibly staying until January 20, 2002. (Will be coming back east at x-mass time). Would like to connect with folks who have done hiking in this area, for advice, possibly palling on a hike, and just plain to connect with other like-minded folk. Can anyone give me feedback on the best day hikes, where to get stuff, what the terrain is like, bug info. etc? I know a lot about hiking in the east, but Arizona will be foreign territory for me, so I can use all the help I can get. Thanks in advance!

Hello Mona and welcome to HAZ!

If your looking to connect with like-minded folks out here I would suggest you stay tuned to this station and watch the HAZ Forum for upcoming group hikes and partners. That time of year I prefer to stay in lower elevation myself, but there are some nice hikes around the Prescott area which you can check out here:

Bienvenidos a HAZ, Mona-

Yup, check out the area hikes around Prescott online here first. Not knowing your hiking experience, I'll suggest Granite Mountain, Thumb Butte and Spruce Mountain. Good dayhikes, not too tough and wonderful scenery.

Some people might offer that hiking Whiskey Row is every bit as entertaining as the backcountry... but that's another story.

Be aware that altitude is everything here in AZ and while it may be sunny and balmy in the deserts around Phoenix and Tucson, it can snow like the dickins around Prescott and higher up. Bugs ought not to be an issue.

Popular Outdoor Outfitters has a store in Prescott at 1841 HWY 69 (in the Frontier Village) and there's another great gear store right downtown whose name I can't remember... help me out here Prescottonians!

I hope your stay here is friendly and fun Mona. Good luck.
