Tucson Resturant Suggestions?

Post by CindyC »

I am going to Tucson tomorrow to hike on Friday. Anyone have any suggestions for a good Mexican Resturant? The hotter the better. And most important, excellent margarita's?

I'm not sure. My sister is in from Colorado Springs and she knows where we are going. She's familiar with hiking that way, I am not with the exception of Mt Lemmon. I'll let you know when we get back. 8) Thanks for the suggestion Mike, I look forward to it.

I second Mike's suggestion. It a very good place and they have a kitchen setup like they really do it in Mexico.

They weather is perfect for a great day out. Have fun!

We've been going to El Minute, just south of the civic center. Stopped there Sunday after Rincon Peak. Thanks for the other recommendation here.

Food in the Old Pueblo

Post by Randy »

Glen probably knows more than I. For the over a hundred a person catagory, the Tack Room, for sure. For regular prices, I like the Chinese at Old Peking on Speedway and for americana, Buddy's on Swan and Grant. Buddy's is owned by the same folks who own the Busters restuarants in Flagstaff and Scottsdale. There two good Mex places on 4th Ave south, One is Zapatas and I forget the other one which is just south of there.

For Really great hot Mex, the Los Dos Molinos restaurnats in Mesa, Phx and Springerville are the best.

Thanks Glen!

La Parilla Suiza also has 2 locations in the Phoenix area. I just found their website, http://laparrillaseuza.uswestdex.com/ so you can check out the menu. My favorite dish is "Enchiladas En Salsa Verde", which is under the Chicken menu. There's a lot more on their menu than shown on the website.

For y'all folks who were at the HAZ Chili Fest earlier this year and tried my creamy green salsa, it was my attempt at the one they serve at La Parilla Suiza. My recipe is at http://hikearizona.com/dex2/viewtopic.php?t=372.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll let you know where I end up to eat and to hike. And I agree, Los Dos is the best, although service has alot to be desired.

And the Los Dos in Springerville is a pretty sad version of the ones down here. I was very disappointed there. It is supposedly the original, but it was a real bummer.

Well thank you all. I did go to La Parilla Suiza and Mike if your salsa is anything like theirs I'm whipping some up today! I had pretty basic fare; cheese enchilda, green corn tamale and charro beans. Best green corn tamale I've ever had! Love their cheese :) As far as the hiking went, we didn't actually go hiking. I gave up rock climbing awhile back and my sister really wanted to go. So she got to my house before I got home from work, found my gear and loaded up her car. Friday morning we headed south of Tucson, exited I think on Continental Road headed I think east and from there I was totally lost. We parked and as I pulled out my gear from the back seat of the car for the day she unloaded the trunk. I couldn't decide if I was pissed at her for her little escapade or thankful that she had tricked me into this. Of course we had to hike to where we climbed so she justified that she didn't mislead me. I did have a good day. Weather was beautiful, and I couldn't have asked for a better climbing partner. I of course forgave her when I had found out that she had brought a cooler of 'Winter Welcome' for after our climbs.

Cindy, glad to hear you enjoyed La Parilla Suiza! My salsa is pretty darn close flavorwise, but I was never able to get it quite as creamy as they do. Feel free to experiment, and if you get closer, post your modifications!! :D

BTW, what is "Winter Welcome"??

It's an ale by Samuel Smith. It only comes out around the holiday's. I'm giving the salsa a shot tomorrow morning. Figure it will be ready for the afternoon. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Cindy,

From this description, it looks like you were hiking/climbing somewhere on Mt. Wrightson. Going east on Continental from I-19, and making a few turns, will take you to Madera Canyon. There are a couple of great trails there. Mt. Baldy and the Super Trail, to name a few. Good elevation gain and great views!

Cindy, was it a huge rock face? It could have been Elephant Head.

It was very big. Keep in mind I gave up climbing awhile ago because of a big scare due to a poor choice in a climbing partner, so anything looks big! It is visible from 19. When I talk to my sister next I'll ask her. I was too busy cussing her out to even care! Although I must admit, the fire has been reignited!

Yeah Cindy, it really sounds like Elephant Head. I am impressed. You are a player! Me, I am afraid of heights so I cannot do that. :o No vertical climbs for me. I don't mind a steep trail but I don't like just hanging in space and Elephant Head is some extreme vertical rock. You go girl!

Glenn, Afraid of heights? Aren't you a pilot? I too am terrified of heights. If I'm with someone that I trust I feel safe though. In hiking I get a little leary. I don't do ridges with steep drops too well. Something I need to work on. :?

Glen, I talked to my sister today and she said it was Elephant Head. She said we did one climb called West Gully and on called Rocktology. I'm assuming she knows what she is talking about! Although after her little escapade I'm not sure I'll ever trust her again.
