The Sky is Falling!!

Post by Cakewalk »

The annual Leonid meteor shower is going to peak on the evenings of nov 18th and 19th.
The weather so far looks good.

They are predicting a storm this year. Imagine seeing hundreds or even thousands of shooting stars per hour! You will need to get away from the city lights.

Last year, Mrs. Cakewalk and I went out towards lake pleasant - it was pretty spactacular- even thow the sky was pretty cloudy, we still saw at least 3 per minute.

Go HERE for more info.

If all of Joes code is in place, when the clock on the server strikes midnight on the 14th the age numbers below my avatar should increase by one. Why don't you stay up thursday night and check it out. :gun: :GB: Ha! Ha! You missed me!

Any rain coming on the night ot the meteor shower?

Anyone can do whatever they want to... I just drive out on a dirt road into the mtns away from the city lights. Last time was in the McDowells. In the Supes, I was thinking like Peralta and maybe an easy hike to the saddle... nothing complicated or tough, something simple and easy thats all. Yes, it is on Monday night and I have to work Tues. morning, too.

Nobody has brought this up, but the 19th is the full moon. This is, unfortunately, going to severely hinder any meteor watching.
Great for hiking, though!

It sounds like the prime-time for this show is going to be from midight to dawn on Tues morn. They are predicting 360/hr in this area. Although, they also state that these predictions aren't very accurate. Like Wiz said, the full moon may hinder things in the sky a bit, but make for a great hike.

The peak for this should be Tues morning between 0230 and 0330. Everything I read says give an hour on either side of this for best viewing. I am planing on being bundled up in a lawnchair in my backyard observatory at 0130 to 0500. For any of you that want to attempt photos of this event I recomend a 50mm lens (wider is ok down to about 35mm after that you get too much sky) 400 to 800 speed film, and shutter times of about 5-10 min on a sturdy tripod. Open the lens wide open. Use a cable release to avoid shaking the camera. Enjoy the shower. 8)

Here's some websites we have looked at concerning the upcoming shower:
One story says it's the last great show for the next hundred years.

So some of you are maybe going on the Garden Valley hike sometime between midnight on Nov. 18th to 5:00am or so Nov. 19th, correct? Basically heading out Monday night and watching it the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Just checking since I might have some others that want to come.

Enjoy the show for the rest of you.
