Hiking candy!

Post by azhiker96 »

I was mixing up some poweraid at the house and neglected to grab the funnel I usually use. Some of the powder fell on the bottle instead of in it. Not wanting to be wasteful, I licked the powder off the rim of my water bottle and a light went off! I knew that taste! I tried some of the powder in the container and then matched it with my memory, Pixi Stix!! The powder (blue type) tasted just like pixi stix! I usually carry powdered poweraid on the trail just for mixing. I will probably include an extra baggie now in case I want a sweet treat. Has anyone else noticed this similarity? Also, what's your favorite non-perishable backpacking treat? :D

Imagine sweetened Kool Aid mix in a paper straw, and you'll be pretty close.

A freind gave me a pixie stick once and it tasted like soap. He was storing them near his soap supply and destroyed them. It was really grose.

I love dried fruit. My favorites are apricot and pears. Costco has a great deal on bags of dried fruit. Their trail mix bags are great as well, if you don't mind the quantity. Sometimes I think the only reason I get invited on hikes is because of my goodies (that and the fact I can be conned into cooking).

Chocolate coffee beans! I forgot all about those! I used to be practically addicted to them. Good way to get a buzz when you want to stay awake but don't want to drink a gallon of coffee and get sick.

Cindy, you sound like a person of refined tastes to me!

Now that's what I'm talking about! Those are good, huh? I tried some dried pineapple (Trader Joe's) last time out and it was tasty too. Not sticky either.

Ah yes.... Chocolate covered coffee beans. Those are great for times when you need to feed the caffiene addiction but don't want to bother with brewing coffee. :D

Speaking of Tequila and Pixy Sticks

Post by David Garcia »

My favorite thing to have after a long hike or when I am just hanging around the campsite, is a good old Backpacker Margarita. Don't knock it till you have tried it.
I have never actually tried using a pixy stick as an ingredient, however, it may work. Actual recipe is mix up some Lemon-Lime Gatorade (Powerade is to sweet for me) and add tequila to taste (be very careful about the to taste part - its amazing how quickly the tequila will disappear). Gatorade has just the right amount of salt, which, really makes this mixure work. I always take Powdered Gatorade on the trail and getting the tequila in was worth the exra effort (put into a plactic container - no glass on the trail).
