Tanner Fire Sierra Ancha

Post by RedRoxx44 »

Supposedly lightning strike Armor mtn, Hwy 288 is closed south of Rose Creek. Looked pretty bad when we were camped down in the Tonto Basin.

That's been burning for over a month. It was being managed, but apparently jumped the road in a thunderstorm. It was discussed when it started. I put up a map of the management perimeter and there's a photo of it from Rim Lakes Vista:

I could delete the post but not sure if would delete all after it too. Smoke plume yesterday was creating it's own thunderhead. Saw smoke up that way three weeks ago but didn't think much of it. It was raining off and on in the area and thought perhaps was out as did not see much smoke on the way back. Looks like it got some of the camp areas around Honey Creek divide. Joe, feel free to delete this posting if you would like.

Came back from camping from the Rim and did observe the smoke plume. I also observed the thunderhead but was unable to determine if it originated over the fire though. It clouded up in the early afternoon and a light shower while I was in Payson mid afternoon. Also observed the smoke plumes in the Pinal's while returning home via the Beeline. I had to return home midweek from my trip and the Plume from the fire in the Pinal's was quite large.

On my drive home the smoke plume appeared huge... From north Mesa it can be seen directly behind 4 Peaks and stretches north to the horizon. I only hope the Sierra Ancha isn't go the way of every other range in AZ, it would be sad to say "I remember that area when there was still a forest." :( :( :(

We had planned on hiking to Hell's Hole in the Salome Wilderness Saturday 6/24 but the night before we decided on something a bit less demanding. Cooper Forks was heading the list as we set out, but once on Cherry Creek Road there was so much smoke and haze blowing that direction we opted for a jaunt down Coon Creek to the Salt River instead.

After the hike we drove around to the south side of the river near Redmond Flat and took the attached photo of the Tanner fire. I had seen the fire on 8/31 when I took a 4x4 trip from Jake's Corner to Young so it has been going for some time.

We also got to experience the effects of the Frio fire on Madera Peak on Saturday. First with the dense smoke on the trip out and with a bright dark orange flame easily seen after dark on the return trip. We could also see a reflective glow of fire on the south side of Madera as well. I had also seen that fire when out 4-wheeling just west of Madera on 8/16 & 8/20.

I'm not concerned that fire will burn every other range in Arizona for a number of reasons...
In most cases it's a natural result of lightning/thunderstorms so it's meant to burn, some areas are so thick with underbrush they need to burn. But I've been to areas of earlier fires between a week and 5-10 years after-the-fact and most have recovered very well as there were intended to. (And many times providing unique photo opportunities)

Working in Fountain Hills today. Very hazy to the east. Couldn't see 4 peaks much less any of the mountains that way. Even could smell smoke a couple times. Is this the Tanner or another fire?

Is the Tanner fire... On Monday night the smoke was a cloud that went from horizon to horizon in Payson down to Roosevelt and as far as we could see north as well as east and west... Really bad every morning coming down from Payson to the valley...

We have a friend that is with the USFS and lives in Tonto Basin. He is with the crews fighting the fire been on it for the last few days.
