In a FUNK
So I did Mt. Whitney at the end of September....
Have been in a hiking funk ever since...
I was hiking 5-10 times/month and have hiked NOTHING since I've done "The Great One"....
What the heck is going on?

Put your shoes on and go! I just got back from boring old Elden. It still delivers the steepest trail close to town.

Re: In a FUNK
I haven't even done my lat 3 trip reports....
I must admit it was one of the greatest weeks of my hiking life....
Took a week off work...no kids, no wife...just me and the open road.
Did Hualupais (Kingman) on Sunday....Whitney on Wednesday...and Mt. Charleston (Vegas) on Friday....
Quite a loop...
Then I had shoulder surgery and I just haven't been the same since....

Oh, man. I think it just takes awhile for the body to heal, longer when you get older. Hope they offered you some physical therapy as well.

Re: In a FUNK
Larry.....It happens more than you know. I had to go many many months without hiking after an ankle injury in January after torquing out my ankle on a long distance hike (Full Dutchman). By the time I was taken off the trail and went through all the physical therapy and rehab it was too damn hot to hike in the valley and gas being $3.50 a gallon I couldn't even afford to drive up to the rim.squatpuke wrote:So I did Mt. I'm just now finding my trail legs again.....but spent a lot of the summer in a funk.
It'll get better!!!!!

I was wondering about your trip reports. I remember you mentioning these trips a few months ago. Whitney sounds epic! I wanna see the pics.squatpuke wrote:I haven't even done my lat 3 trip reports....

If your healthy again get yourself out! I'm currently down with an injury and I'm dying to go hiking! A few more weeks and I should be good as new. Speaking of hiking let me know if you'll be down in Phoenix around the xmas holidays. We can meet up for a hike.

Re: In a FUNK
That's exactly how I feel after a long-planned backpacking trip. It's a major let-down - back to "real life."
I keep myself going by telling myself I have to keep it together for the next trip. And start planning that next trip right away - even if it's a year away. Use the time to do some nearby hikes as training, and you'll slowly begin to enjoy the hikes just for themselves. At least that helps me...

I think it's the same for all sorts of big events. I've noted it after coming back from an exciting summit. You just have to have something exciting to do or another hike you want to do.

I heard that the guys that walked on the moon had a big sense of "what the hell, everything else is lame after that" syndrome as well.

Re: In a FUNK
I know I can't foresee what life will be like after living in Costa Rica and graduation. I officially graduate from college the same day I return to the US from studying abroad for four months, in mid-May. And I already have a sense of loss of goals. I have a big month-long river trip in the fall, but that is something I have to plan around, since I also will need to be working. It's a big worry right now. What the heck am I going to do with myself? Grad school at age 59? So be it...

Re: In a FUNK
The shoulder surgery sounds like it might be a big factor. When I had mine I was surprised at how difficult it was to recover. Keep rehabbin' and just almost force yourself to go out. Pick a trail, pick a date, and just GO!
