The yen and yang of employment.... Chapter 2

Post by Cakewalk »

And I Quote:

" ATLANTA (AP) - Internet service provider EarthLink Inc. plans to close its Phoenix call center facility, which employs 250 people.

The company said Wednesday that the closure was part of an effort to consolidate operations and reduce costs. Its Phoenix landlord has agreed to terminate the lease and enter into a long-term lease with The University of Phoenix, effective Dec. 1, EarthLink officials said. "

Happy Holidays everyone! Ummm - Get out!

Severence package includes full salary thru the end of the year and yearly bonus will still be paid in Feb.

So I guess Im on the hunt as of 11-16-02 :?

Wow! That sucks! Was that article the first you heard about it?
Can you qualify for unemployment benefits? It ain't much, but it sure helps.
Good luck finding something else, and keep your spirits up! Everything will turn out for the best.

Dude - I feel for you man. But, I do have some connections in Phoenix now with B of A - they are hiring over 100 people for a new department that is moving here from San Fran, so let me know if you would like for me to look around. You can send me your resume if you like as well - I'll see if I can pass it around to a few people.

Shhhhh - don't tell anyone. I want to keep the burger flipping job a secret - I get $8.03 an hour! (of course I had to work for that raise - but that .03 put me over the top.).

Seriously - I know what you're saying - lots of stuff out there if you want to work for peanuts. Not much at all in the career area. It's a brutal economy.

I suggest that NAFTA and the fact that Arizona is a right-to-starve state contributes greatly to this problem.
Is this controversial? (hope so)

Wiz - you are asking for trouble there. I am VERY much in favor of the Right to Work state. But then I'm a dyed in the wool capitalist too - so don't pay much attention to me. Not that anyone does anyway...

Olesma,
How is the new job going? We don't hear much from you these days, which is not surprising considering the brain-twisting schedule you must be keeping!

[So I guess Im on the hunt as of 11-16-02 :?]

Hey CW...any luck yet? I met the same fate on 11-16-00! My answer was to move 1600 miles away...that still hasn't worked! I decided to start my own business...no more layoffs...but, many more headaches! :(

Time to get in some of those hikes you've been wanting to do...right? Stay positive... It is rough out there, hang tough....everything will work out. :)

Well, the job is going well - they are paying me well and I get enough freedom to be able to attend all my classes and keep up (sort-of) with my school-work. I am MUCH busier than I was over the last year though. Amazing how much busier, but things are leveling out now and I'm finding a groove in my daily schedule.

Haven't had a good hike - or even a restful weekend for about 2 months though. But the end is in sight - semester is over on the 12th of December. Just trying to muscle my way through till then.

And as a small side note (or big if you're in need) Bank of America is hiring quite a bit these days. If you go onto their website and look at employment you can find quite a bit. Try not to pay too much attention to location of the job though. B of A allows for a lot of telecommuting and quite a lot of people on the same "team" are spread out accross the nation. If you have the qualifications and location isn't all important (which it seldom is) you have a good shot at getting hired.
