Post by nonot »

Anybody who rises early (approx 5:30 AM AZT) on Saturday morning should look for the red lunar eclipse, weather permitting. Heads up for you campers and photographers!

5:30?? are you sure about that....?

I am pretty sure it is going to be at 7:57 AM according to this

http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEplot/LEp ... Dec10T.pdf

It says the lunar eclipse will be visible at 14:57 UT which is 7 hours faster than MST, meaning about 7:57??

Can someone confirm, I don't want to miss this :)

Well, if I read that correctly, we won't have a very impressive view anyway. With the most visibility at moon set, we should see it around 0800.

I've read 5:30 as well. AZ will get to see the full eclipse only at moonset. We are in between the U2 and U3 lines, which would correlate to between 14:06-14:57, so roughly 14:30 for the midportion of the band. That would translate to ~7:30. Not sure why the error or which is actually correct (though I think NASA probably knows what is up). This has impacts on my students' extra credit opportunity, though...

From what I'm reading, It starts about 5:30 and runs through 8 AM. However the moon will be below the horizon by 7:58 AM at 7:30 the redness is at it's peak, but the moon is only 2 degrees above the horizon in phoenix (and below the horizon in tucson) - likely you won't see it. Earlier on you will have a better view and catch the onset. Those at the top of a mountain by 7AM would have the best view of all. Or else be in California...
