Best way to carry a SPOT

Purchased one of the Orange SPOT locator/trackers ... wondering how best to carry it so it does not interfere with my movements but is in a position to maintain sat. contact for tracking ... any suggestions. Thanks.

Not sure how well you can tell from these pictures...
I learned the hard way by getting one ripped off my pack in the middle of nowhere. It left a web track until the battery died. I had purchased the $17 insurance and decided to replace it lieu of the long hard trek to go get it.

So for the second one, It's mounted on the top of my backpack. This gives it a good view of the sky. I used the elastic velcro strap provided, and wrapped it around the shoulder straps where they meet the top of the pack. Next I used a couple of Carabiners on different locations on the SPOT case, to attach to different straps on my pack. My thinking was if it got ripped off one section of the pack, it would have a second and third point of attachment. It's worked so far.

Even if you don't use the tracking feature (that is, you push the OK button per a pre-arranged plan) I think it is a good idea to have it visible on your pack. At the Wilderness First Aid class I was thinking how knowledge that this device is available might change the situation for those who might come upon you.

I have always worn mine on the chest strap of my daypack or frame pack. Except our one trip to Rainbow Bridge (where it didn't send out updates, but did send the track), it has performed just fine there. This has the added benefit of being in easy reach in case you need to reach a button, and you can easily see if the last message/track update was sent.

I have the original model, which did not come with velcro straps or a holder. I attached a little lanyard from an old camera to one of the screws on the back battery cover and slip it thru the top strap of my pack, then hook the whole thing on the top so that it points up to the sky. I wish I had the smaller unit, but can't justify buying one when the old one works just fine. Lots of people I pass on the trail ask what it is, and I think it is such a good idea that I don't mind educating them on Spot.
