Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association will be conducting our next 2-day Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification course on
JANUARY 28-29, 8AM-5PM

HAZ folks who attended our last WFA, at the North Mountain Visitor Center, were focused, engaged and a real pleasure to work with.

This two day/16 hour certification course provides classroom and hands-on instruction including outdoor scenarios on how to prevent and respond to medical situations while in the backcountry. If you venture into the backcountry and experience an emergency medical situation, you are the first responder and your response to a medical situation can truly make the difference between life and death.

Class size is limited to 26 students to provide a beneficial student/instructor ratio.
A text book is provided as well as any medical supplies, but participants will learn to improvise with what is in their packs.

Great! Bring your pack as you would pack it for a hike, if you have hiking poles, bring those also and even though you might not normally have a bulky fleece jacket or sweatshirt, bring something OLD to use as padding. It will get dirty, which is why you don't want to bring something new This will help you a lot with the outdoors medical scenarios that we do....

Nah, don't use poles. I was wondering what you could use for a field expedient splint? Saguaro rib maybe, if a dead cactus is nearby. Other than that?

yes, any branches like mesquite, ocatillo (stripped) saguaro, also steel or aluminum stays that are sometimes in your back pack frame (internal), or a flexible splint we call a "sam splint" which we will supply.
For the class, if you bring poles, you will get a better idea of the concept, knowing that sticks can also be used in place of, but that is your call. I don't use poles either.....
