Superstition Water (Tortilla Creek)

Post by mnichols »

I am planning on taking my kiddos out to the Superstitions for my last backpacking trip in in this area (we are moving :( )

I was looking at Tortilla TH, hooking up with Pete's pick trail about 2.25 miles in and setting up there.

Has anyone been in that part of Tortilla Creek lately,or maybe on the Hoolie Bacon near there, and can you tell me any water that might be out there?

I used to camp quite a bit down there and Tortilla Creek was fairly reliable, but that was years ago.

I am open to suggestions for other lower (western) Superstition hikes as well if you know there is water nearby. I need to keep it to the 2-3 mile range though (one way).

Any tips would be welcome!
Thank you
mike

If you have not driven from Highway 88 to the actual Peters Traihead recently you might want to check it out before you go as it requires a monster high clearance four wheel drive vehicle that you are also willing to have Arizona pin striped.

And what are the ages of your "kiddos"?

Thanks for your reply,
I know last time I was out there my Tacoma enjoyed the big stairs at the head of that road. That is why this time we are just backpacking down . It'll make a nice short backpacking trip for my 5 and 7 year olds.

Ideally there'd be a water source nearby so we can stay longer. Obviously it is too far for Charlebois but if Tortilla creek has water in it that would work.

It's pretty dry right now, isn't it? With kids that young I'm guessing you are carrying a lot of gear already, and you probably don't want to carry three gallons of water! ;)
