So, Saturday morning we're going to carpool up to Flag and attack the snowy monster. The trail is still open (as of this writing) but there is snow on the trail, up to a foot at the summit. Temps in Flag are the 20s at night with highs in the 40s. It's going to be cold. Let me know if you want to go. I want to start the hike at 9am. That should give us plenty of time to get up and down during daylight. We can back out a time for carpooling from the valley if enough folks show interest. Also, if you don't think you can summit you could consider doing part of the hike, from the TH to the tree line. Great views and a nice hike in the pines.

Saturday Mt. Humphrey
I've been checking on trail conditions on Mt. Humphrey. This is an utterly stupid time of the year to hike the tallest peak in Arizona but what the heck. Here's the deal. Matt (hiking partner on the ridgeline and 4 peaks) is leaving Arizona. Some form of lunacy has convinced him to move back East. He'll be heading out in late December/early January so he's trying to hit the high points of Arizona hiking before he leaves. There's no point higher around here than Mt. Humphrey.

Now THAT is funny. However, when correlated with the desire to shoot one's self the number rises to 99.975%. The effect size of Death to Statistics is bordering 100%, r2 change = .998. The result is statistically significant, p < .01.Wiz wrote:87% of the population agrees.olesma wrote:Statistics suck.
Seriously...somebody shoot me. I was contemplating taking out a contract on myself during class today. Of course that woudn't save my GPA for this semester.

Hey - we're looking at an Enronesque tank job now that I'm on board. Just wait till I'm done with 'em! (correlation is showing an effect size....oh, nevermind...)evenstarx3 wrote:olesma wrote: Somebody shoot me now.

George & Matt,
Thanks for waiting for me on the first leg down from the summit. That was really rough. I got shinned and kneed by rocks hiding in snow drifts and fell a couple of times. The bottle of water you guys gave me helped a lot. It turned out though that water in my drinking tube had frozen which caused me to think the bag was empty. Didn't get down to the parking lot until almost 5:00 and it was snowing by then. But all in all, a great adventure.
I uploaded the pictures, by the way. Hopefully, they will be posted soon. Watch out for them because both of you are prominently featured. I'm planning to write an in depth story of this hike, using the pictures and GPS data I took, and post it on my web page.

Gil,
The drifts and hidden rocks were a challenge. I sank up to my hip in one drift. We only got out about an hour ahead of you. At that time the snow was on the other side of the valley but it looked pretty cool. The trek out through the woods seemed longer than the one in. We both thought someone must have added a couple of miles of trail while we were on the summit. We also both got a touch of altitude sickness. Our headaches lasted until after we decended from the rim. Glad you made it out okay. We never saw the birthday girl after the summit. She must have trotted back to the trailhead. It was good to meet you. I've looking forward to seeing the photos.

I went up there yesterday and hiked probably 3 miles before my frozen toes told me to turn back. I don't have any water-proof boots so my feet were wet before I even got to the trail register. It was still fun being in snow for a couple hours .. I'll have to take a partner and be a little more serious about the hike next time though!
