Arizona Backpacking Club Open Event

Post by writelots »

We're going to have a Camping and Hiking Jamboree in the Pinals the weekend of March 30th. It's a come one, come all kind of thing.
There'll be camping! There'll be hiking! There'll be fun, and frolic and frisbee! But most of all, there will be awesome people (namely us)!

Although it's hard to believe, the last ABC Jamboree was in May 2010! Even if it's been a couple of years, we still know how to have a car-campy good time, and we're determined to make it shine once again.

This year we'll visit the Pinal Mts. near Globe. This means approximately the same drive time for both Valley residents and those in the Old Pueblo. The Pinals are full of awesome hiking opportunities and activities for the non-hiker type as well!

Camp will open Friday afternoon @ 4pm (that's when I'll get there). It's first come first served at the campground, however, I've been assured by the Forest Service that we won't have trouble with space. Try to carpool if you can, parking at these campgrounds is always tricky.

We'll have a camp together Friday and Saturday night. Come for the day or come for the weekend - your choice!

Saturday evening backcountry cocktail and appetizer lessons: bring your favorites or learn from the masters.

Saturday night cooking competition: fire it up boys and girls!

Sunday morning bloody mary bar: bring your favorite fixin's, I'll bring the basics.

Bring the wife, husband, kids, grandparents and dogs. It's going to be a great time!
I plan to do a loop on one of the awesome trails up there Saturday, but not TOO long a loop, as I want to get back in time to kick butt in the cooking competition. (Please note, we WILL need judges as well!)

Come join us for a fun weekend!

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Does anyone have any idea what I might expect for road conditions on the way to this CG? I got a report that it is very bad, even if you have 4wd. I really don't want to have trouble with the road - many of our members do not have that kind of vehicle power... :scared:

Where are you parking - you can easily make it to the lower TH (icehouse/sixshooter/etc) in a car. I've never driven to the top.

I've been to the top and in dry conditions it is perfectly suitable for a passenger car (at a reasonable speed). The road is all uphill and winding with big drop offs but the big question here is what the road is like this week due to that winter storm that rolled through last weekend. The campground sits at about 6000 ft and I have no report on how much snow or run off is up there...if they got a lot of snow I could see how this road could turn to mud and muck right quick and be difficult. I might have to take a reconnaissance drive up there this weekend to check it out. Even if it's drying out who knows what vehicles were up there in the mud and what kind of ruts are in the road. I have a 2WD X-Terra and know when to say uncle so I promise not to go too far and get stuck ;)

Okie Dokie....I'm heading out to Pioneer Pass Camground tomorrow for a recon mission. Will stop at Judy's for breakfast and then head on up to the Pinals and see if it's doable for the ABC'ers next weekend. ....

Revised this due to Trish's most excellent (if disappointing) description of road conditions in the Pinals. Now we will be camping at Oak Flat outside Superior. I figure there are some primo hikes around there... should be a blast.

And, for those of you who are cold-phobic... it should be WARMER!!! :y:
