Lessons learned the hard way
I thought this might be fun: things we have learned the hard way. Here's a couple to get things rolling:
- Clip your toenails before going down the Grand Canyon.
- Bring a variety of food. Never try a several-day trip with nothing but power bars.
- If your toe feels funny, stop and put on a moleskin before the blister forms. Afterwards is way too late.

Sandy or Sande backwash? If stopping for a break and taking off your pack, don't lie the pack down with the bladder spout thingie underneath or against a hard surface....(if you see a puddle, it's too late)...and wipe off the mouthpiece or you will get sandy backwash.

Bad. Excuse me... really bad.
Must be the theme of this thread.

- Don't break in a new pair of hiking boots on hike, or you will go thru lots of moleskin
- Don't believe a first time hiker in your group that says he is bringing enough water, make them tell you how many ounces of water they are bringing.
- "I think it's that way" is not a good bushwaking strategy, read the map and navigate.

I'm going to take issue with this. Yes, some of their guidebooks do stink. (if you look closely, you'll see all the bad ones are authored or coauthored by Bruce Grubbs.) However, some Falcon Guidebooks are definitely worthy. "Hiking Ruins Seldom Seen" and "Hiking Arizona's Cactus Country" both have detailed routes that are not in other guidebooks. If you look at other states, you'll see the same mix of bad and good. I think Falcon just has low standards for what they'll accept.ck1 wrote: falcon guidebooks suck

Daffy duck in one of the better cartoons they ever made - love the spoofs off of original stuff. Dripalong Daffy and the Robin Hood one whose title escapes me at the moment. And I quote:

Oh, those lessions, those lessions!
Well, this topic is "pure essence of HAZ," distilled and ready to sniff right out of the Bottle Byte.
What a pleasure to read and enjoy! So much wisdom, so much folly, so much humor!
Clearly, there is already enough material to write a book!
We when we guided river trips we quickly learned that people never remembered the "good times." They remember their raft flips, their chills and spills and botched food. Give 'em an A-1 trip and no one had anything to say. Take 'em over "Death Falls" and they'd chatter 'til the cows came home.
Enjoy!

Re: Oh, those lessions, those lessions!
OK! OK! I admit it! I misspelled LESSONS! I didn't even realize it until I read this post! GAAH!montezumawell wrote: NOTE: Whoever started this topic needs to know they actually could use the "edit" function and change "Lessions" to either its correct spelling or something ever more appropriate or perhaps outrageous. Whatever, lessions fits and it is good.

But I don't know how to fix it!

Lessons Learned the Hardway
When you find a breakfast meal that works, stick with it. Changing it before a West Boulder hike could cause you to see it again.

Voted as the 2nd best cartoon ever by the industry a few years ago. In my mind it is the greatest cartoon ever created it. I have an MP3 of it and can sing along through the whole thing.Randy wrote:OK Warbler, I sense a chorus of Wagner coming up....

Lessons Learned the Hard Way
I just learned this one today. You know that line that says "STOP" when you're extending hiking poles? They mean it! If you extend them beyond that and apply a little pressure, the results will not be good!
