Region Four of the USDA Forest Service includes some of the 'headliner' forests in Utah, Idaho, Nevada and Wyoming. Each season, Region 4 prints one of the best 'Volunteer Opportunities' guidebooks in the Forest Service. The 2002 edition includes 26 different opportunities to volunteer building and maintaining trails. The listings are pretty awesome, from Escalante, Utah, to the 900 miles of trails in the McCall Ranger District of the Payette National Forest in Idaho. Some of the volunteers are required to camp out for up in wildernesses for up to 10 days in a row! Gee, bummer!
It's possible in most cases to get some minimalist lodging, some subsistence money and all the tools you can wear out. If you're a student or retiree with the summer free and you love butt-bustin' work with great views, this is for you!
All of this is on the Region 4 website:
